NATO was important and necessary during the Cold War. Current day Russia cannot defeat Ukraine, a nation with a small fraction of the manpower and industry of its larger neighbor. If, perhaps under another ruler, Russia becomes competent militarily, the European nations can form a pan-European military coalition to stop Russia from retaking former Soviet or Tsarist territory. Europe has more population and industry than Russia. Are their countries willing to cut back the generous social welfare schemes to fund competent armed forces?
