I’ve been arguing for years that the guaranteed student loans should be guaranteed by the educational institution themselves. They would be incentivized to keep prices lower and give degrees that may lead to actual knowledge and skills. Instead, they charge six figures for useless degrees and have the taxpayers on the hook while they raked in the money.

But they get to wear a t-shirt that reads: I’m Glad I Are a College Student.”

Get the government out of student loan business and let the colleges deal with it. They’d have to charge less and offer real degrees since they’ll be on the hook on getting paid back.

Yes, for professionals, University is still the gatekeeper. I don’t know, maybe you can take the bar exam with out a degree, but I doubt you could ever be licensed as a doctor without one.

There is also a caveat for personality.
Some people are self starters/motivators, and they can learn better and faster without having to sit in a lecture hall and a lab several times per week.

Other people need the structure.

I’d rather hire the self motivator, personally, but I guess there’s a place for everyone.

Ah, Jordan Belfort. Exactly the sort of person we should be listening to when it comes to how to order society.

Education is mostly wasted on the young. Now that I'm in my 60s, I love to learn and I'm always reading literature, history, and what not. Back when I was young, I just wanted to ditch my books and get to the next party.

I agree that some professions, like medicine and law, need some university time, but by and large, the workplace (and the real world) is the best place to learn.

Bring back apprenticeships for the trades!

I think the optimal path is part-time, while you are building a career....obviously focusing on the educational needs that will make you better, but not taking time off from working to do so....

there’s still value for a person in business to for example learn accounting....and it’s super valuable after/during you actually working in business - it all just makes sense

but the point being: the default position of devoting 4 years when you are young and able to work to college is wasteful

A lot of college majors are a waste of time and money. And many colleges are way overpriced. But there are good reasons for kids going to college if they have defined goals and a plan to achieve them. You have to go to college to be a doctor or lawyer. Or to work in certain financial professions. But going to college and majoring in some liberal arts course with no plan, aim or goals is a recipe for disaster.

I like Jordan Belfort. He was shady early on and paid for it. He seems like he accumulated a lot of wisdom from his mistakes and likes to share it.

I use to have these MBA’s with their pedigrees thinking they were better than me and wondering WTH I am doing to get my deals.

They were mortified when I said “Cold Calling and people skills. They didn’t teach that in advanced basket weaving?”

One guy threatened to kick my Azz.

I laughed “You can’t fight sleep. You don’t want to fight me...”

Degrees for most jobs are just dumb.
