Biden wants the US to make 20% of all high-end chips by end of the decade

The Biden administration laid out an ambitious new goal for the US: produce 20% of the world’s most advanced semiconductor chips by the end of the decade.

It currently makes 0% of the so-called leading edge logic chips that are considerably more powerful than older-generation semiconductors, making them crucial for everything from mobile phones to AI to quantum computing.

The legislation allows the White House to spend $50 billion in taxpayer dollars — $39 billion specifically earmarked for manufacturing — to try and help reignite American manufacturing in the years ahead.

This is the least efficient way to accomplish the goal. Biden is trying to push on a string. Instead of more drunken sailor spending, of which some will end up in Biden's pocket, how about giving tax breaks to chip manufactures and get the EPA off their back?

“Bilden Plan To Get 20 of High-End Chips Made in US by 2030”

Typical LOW EXPECTATIONS from the Democrats. For starters, how about the BILLIONS of these chips - do they even matter to the Democrats, once the goal of 20 is reached?

The biggest problem with building advanced chip manufacturing facilities in the U.S. isn't a lack of money...it is a lack of worker talent. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Man.) is currently trying to build a facility in Arizona, but it is going slowly for that reason.
TSMC is having more luck building in Japan than in America--Truculent workers and red tape have slowed its efforts in Arizona

Do you mean that not one of us taxpayers who “invest” in this entire “project” will
never glean a profit from our “investments”??
Arf!

The only high end chips Biden is aware of are Pringles.

A simple import tariff would do the job.

I don’t like tariffs. A chip plant is going to take years to complete so the benefits are years away. Meanwhile, we still have to use foreign chips and the tariffs raise their prices for US consumers. The only winner from a tariff is the US gov’t from the money they collect...it’s a windfall gain to Biden because he does nothing productive, but gets paid anyway. A tax break is price-neutral while the plants are built and business benefits only accrue if they build the plant and hire more people.

tariffs raise their prices for US consumers.

That is the point. That is good thing. Who better to pay this budget balancing tax than the consumers of imported goods? Citizens ( myself included ) should pay a premium when letting 3rd worlders make everything for them. Get it?

When domestic supply comes on line the price will go down because tariffs don't end domestic competition. It took long time for Free traitors™ to sell out the USA and it will take a long time to fix it.

I’ll bet a tariff that goes directly to fund SS and Medicare would be WILDLY popular. Now, if we just had that “lock box”.

Lack of worker talent? Is this still during basic construction? Can they not find bulldozer operators, concrete finishers and HVAC guys in Arizona? Or does this have to do with the cutting edge fabrication equipment — and I have no idea where that is manufactured, but I doubt that it’s in Arizona?

Where is the talent bottleneck?

Lack of talent is mostly lack of education:

In China, the average Chinese on the street can recite the history of China going back thousands of years.

In America, the average man on the street can only recite US history going back to the morning breakfast.

Its crazy we allowed ourselves to become so dependent on foreign suppliers given the chips importance for Defense components.

Its the same with oil and rare earths. Some industries we need to maintain production capacity in - even if we have to subsidize them and/or tariff foreign goods - because they are vital to national security.

They better not mess with my Great Lakes Sea-Salt and Vinegar crunchy chips, or there will be problems, to be sure.
