Mitch Daniels passes on Senate campaign
The Hill ^ | AL WEAVER

The announcement by Daniels concludes a month during which he considered running for the seat that Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) is vacating to run for governor. Daniels had spent the past decade as president of Purdue University after wrapping up his two terms as governor of the state.

Part of that process involved visiting Capitol Hill last week. In Tuesday’s statement, Daniels explained that he wanted to see if he would enjoy being a senator after a career filled with serving in executive capacities. The ex-governor also said that he would have used the time during a single term in the Senate to deal with issues that matter to him, including safety net programs, the national debt, immigration and international affairs.

Daniels decision also means that the Indiana primary battle may not be as nasty. A contest between Daniels and Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) would have represented a proxy battle between the establishment and the MAGA wings of the party, with conservative forces lining up behind the sitting congressman.

Among those was the Club for Growth, which launched a broadside against Daniels’s potential candidacy with a mid-January ad declaring that he is a figure of the past.

This article tells me that Daniels got a call from the Oligarchy (probably McConnell or a McConnell minion) to try to get Daniels to run.

Because they probably don't want Banks in the Senate.

And why would they? Look at Banks CR Liberty score in comparison with Senator Young's Liberty score. Daniels would be ANOTHER senator in his 70's who votes in the 50th conservative percentile. Banks is not as conservative as Braun (88%) but will vote better than Young currently does.

Jim Banks: 78%

Todd Young: 52%

Daniels is smart. He knows from past experience that campaigning will be very hard on his family and he doesn’t want to put them through that. I wouldn’t either.

Jeez, just what we need… another Senator from a Red state who will slavishly support the Chamber of Commerce’s OPEN BORDERS AGENDA.

I have a lot of doubts about these scoring methods on who is conservative and who is not.

Conservatism is Drain the Swamp and Build the Wall. It is most decidedly NOT vote for some insignificant bill with some insignificant tax cut or spending cut that never became law and would have changed the deficit from $1.8Trillion to still $1.8Trillion because the cuts offset.

These people with political careers are filth. They are the Swamp. It’s unfortunate that the best they can do in this case is a sitting Congressman, who is also Swamp.

Mitch Daniels is a man of achievements. He did great job as a governor. As Bush budget director and probably the best as Purdue University president.
During his tenure, the university tuition was NEVER raised.
He actually targeted the administrators for budget cuts. What innovative!
Obviously, the legislative branch is quite boring. Listening to a lot of dummy speeches and voting occasionally. I would be bored to death!
He is a man of action, he likes to be a man in charge!
He may be looking for some position in future Trump administration.

Senators and governors typically have very different personalities. I think someone who has been governor would be bored out of his mind in the U.S. Senate.

I remember radio hosts Don and Roma in Chicago had an interview with Daniels when he was Governor. He came from Indianapolis by himself on his motorcycle to the studio in Chicago. No bodyguards, no aids, no security. They compared him to interviews they had with Chicago’s mayor Daley where he would arrive with a four man security detail, HR rep, driver, etc...

There are two types of rating sites. Both are good because they are based on a politician’s actual voting record.

There are sites that are abbreviated and focus on key issues like the debt, border security, 2A, etc.

1. Conservative Review’s Liberty Score: https://libertyscore.conservativereview.com

Other sites are more comprehensive and offer a lifetime voting score.

1. The New American Freedom Index: https://thenewamerican.com

2. CPAC’s Center for Legislative Accountability: http://ratings.conservative.org

3. Heritage Action: https://heritageaction.com

I prefer the abbreviated sites because they focus on key issues that I care about. Any politician can have an overall good score and be weak on the most important issues (John McCain for example).

Here are the scores for Jim Banks (R-IN):

Conservative Review’s Liberty Score: https://libertyscore.conservativereview.com/jim-banks

The New American Freedom Index: https://thenewamerican.com/freedom-index/legislator/b001299/

CPAC: http://ratings.conservative.org/people/B001299

Heritage Action: https://heritageaction.com/scorecard/members/B001299/118

I think it was Ed Rollins who said that Governors and Senators make the worst cabinet members. I agree with that opinion.

I agree. Todd Young has been a huge disappointment. He one of the biggest RINO's>

Obama used to say that Sen. Lugar was his favorite Republican. I think Young is trying to take Lugar's place in that role!

You listed issues you called key and there was nothing there about Drain the Swamp. These people with political careers and Swamp filth. They are to be viewed as deserving contempt.

They drove the debt up to $36T at election day. Why should incumbents have any advantage, especially when they have staff who can organize manipulation of such scores.

The primary requirement is a desire to end political careers.

*I think someone who has been governor would be bored out of his mind in the U.S. Senate.* I would disagree when it comes to democrats. It’s what they live for.

Braun is challenged by the Lt. Gov. Let’s hope she wins.

Daniels just may have been the best POTUS we didn’t have. We’ll never know. He’s 74. Don’t waste your time Mitch.
