EU aims to shift European arms industry to ‘war economy mode’

The European Commission will propose on Tuesday ways for the European Union to boost its arms industry so it can shift to “war economy mode” in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Thierry Breton, the European industry commissioner, will lay out proposals to encourage EU countries to buy more weapons together from European companies, and to help such firms increase production capacity, according to EU officials.

“We need to change the paradigm and move into war economy mode. This also means that the European defense industry must take more risks, with our support,” said Breton, previewing the package.

Breton, a French former tech company CEO, has also said the possibility of another U.S. presidential term for Donald Trump — who has questioned Washington’s commitments to NATO — means Europe has to do more to protect itself. …

“EU aims to shift European arms industry to ‘war economy mode’”

I think that within a couple of weeks after the Neocons sabatoged the peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, in early April, 2022, Russia shifted to a war-like economy.

That was 2 years ago, now Europe is finally doing it. My guess is that they thought it back then, but have been arguing with each other for the past 2 years, so they never got around to it.

Likewise, the US has barely lifted a finger to step up hardware production, but given the way that the bunch who runs our government DESPISES the military, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

France’s Macron is the one beating the ‘war drum’.

“Russia’s war in Ukraine has prompted many European countries to increase defence spending.”

Bad news for Andrew Gray, the author, he’ll soon be out of a job at Reuters.

The above should have read: “Russia’s UNPROVOKED war in Ukraine...”

That’s constructive. Europe needs to defend themselves with only minimal help from the USA.

The Germans should have considered this possibility before they allowed the greens and sanctionistas to deindustrialize the nation.

It’s nice for them to talk about doing it, but will they really do it? I mean they seem to be much more concerned about their “carbon footprint”. From a Social Democrat point of view, won’t this exacerbate the climate crisis in Europe?

More spent on weapons equals more debt, or less benefits to citizens?

Insanity.
They’re making a problem where there isn’t one, laying the groundwork for war with Russia.
Putin is trying to regain what used to be part of Russia before the collapse of the Soviet Union took it away.
The West is picking a fight for reasons other than Ukraine, we just don’t know what that might be, but starting a world war isn’t a solution, it’s an unnecessary provocation.

Europe has more of a problem than not enough weapons. If you see the posts on Twitter/X their own populations are about ready to kill their leaders.

Everything from illegal immigration, taking people’s farms, etc. has the population mad.

Perhaps ramping up war production is not about three break-away oblasts in Ukraine.

I would say that doubling the current military budgets for all NATO countries other than the US would be a good start.

Exactly it’s a good thing and we can give some credit to the Republicans for sending the message the Europeans need to do more to defend themselves.

We need to be on the same footing but I’m sure Biden is weakening us.

The real problem is WHAT to make. We are a maritime trading nation, surrounded on two sides by wide oceans that make us impervious to armed invasion if we protect sea lines of communication, the same sLOCs we need to keep open to maintain trade with our natural allies, those on the other end of those SLOCs, which also gives the easy ability to support the defens of our natural allies. That was all fine until Bush Cheney decided we need to drop all that, become an asian land power and sort out problems in all sorts of places that it is very very expensive for us to get to [Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine. Syria at least has coastline on the Med. So does Israel who would be a natural ally except that he Dems would rather support Asian land empires.

Now the big problem is that with technological developments [satellite reconaisance, hypersonic missiles, sea-drones, air-drones and cruise missiles on patrol boats, oh and nuclear submarines] our carriers are a lot more vulnerable than the used to be - though the War in the Pacific in WWII shows that aircraft carriers were plenty vulnarable even then.

So, again the question is what mix of weapons systems do we need to evolve to to support the maritime defense strategy we need to have.

Oh and all of this only works if we secure our own continent by ridding ourselves of communists in the North and wealthy armed bandits who are invading from the South.

The Ukraine fiasco needs to end. NATO is war mongering and pushing east. If this was during the Cold War the Soviet Union would retaliate by nuclear force. To uderestimate Putin is a mistake. Russia will NEVER give up Ukraine. The United States needs to be arbiter of diplomacy and common sense.Provoking WWIII is insanity.

Well put!

If it were up to me, from what I’ve seen in Ukraine, stepping up tunneling technology might be the way to go.
