CTA union leader supports deploying National Guard on Chicago transit system
CWB Chicago ^ | March 15, 2024 | Glenn Minnis

Only days after one passenger shot and killed another aboard a West Side bus filled with other riders, Chicago Transit Authority union leader Keith Hill says he’s now open to seeing the Illinois National Guard provide security for the long-troubled system.

“Since 2017, my call has been for extra security, a presence on the transit system,” Hill told The Center Square. “From a worker standpoint, the workers need to feel safe. When a person rides the system, they should feel safe getting from point A to point B.”

Late Tuesday night, a 53-year-old man began waving a knife around while riding a CTA bus in the 4400 block of West Division, according to CPD. Another passenger pulled out a gun, shot the man, and fled before police arrived.

Now, Hill, head of Amalgamated Transit Union 241, says he envisions a plan similar to the one put in place earlier this month by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul: Teams of guard members are stationed at different locations across the city, conducting bag checks for weapons as part of a security detail.

First NYC, now Chicago.

Bag checks for weapons. Boarding the subway like boarding an airplane.

Bag checks for weapons. Wasn't that found unconstitutional when Giuliani had the NYPD doing it?

And it doesn't address the trend of people being shoved off the platform. That wasn't even a thing before the great unleashing 2020.

Some years back some were warning that what was happening with air travel would spread to other forms of mass transit.

Might be tin foil, but you have to wonder if they're trying to "normalize" the presence of the military acting as law enforcement, in addition to routine search violations. Is it a ramp up for something? Think about how they're flying in unvetted illegals, destabilizing the country, driving calls for "someone to do something".

So what happened to the cops in these cities? Who is paying the national guard? Is this a way for liberal run cities to shore up their budgets and lack of funding for their own police force?

This is really not a mission for the National Guard. If they need more security they should hire more security.

Everything hinges on what the guard can do. If he can shoot someone or put his knee on their neck, they’ll be effective. If all they can do is wag a finger and get hurt, well, they’ll be less effective. The Left has this teacher taking-control-of-first-grader’s view of how things will work. These aren’t small children and there is no extra authority given for wearing a uniform. In the case where no excessive force can be used, a uniform just makes you a more attractive target.

While I can understand people wanting security this is police state level stuff we are slipping into. This is how it is in third world countries with armed soldiers hanging about. Just hire enough police to handle things. Sometimes I think the left wants the military involved because they can be controlled at the Federal level instead of locally.

On federal missions the federal government foots the bill. On state missions, the state pays the bill. Federal active duty pays the Soldiers at a much higher rate than State active duty. Usually way less than Soldiers make at their normal employment.

Defund police and save money by have the federal government pay for security, genius.

Be prepared to defend your life, your liberty. Anti-life, anti-freedom individuals/gangs/mobs/collectives are prepared to take it. Be aware. Look, listen.

I agree with you, putting the national guard in cities makes me very uncomfortable, it’s hard to digest, but this type of thing is a planned disaster, gut the police force, refuse to prosecute violent criminals, and you get anarchy in the streets, as a last resort call in the national guard and a lot people will welcome it until they realize the armed soldiers are there to control them not the criminals.

But NO GUNS!
No, no, no - that would scare some pansies - I mean, liberals.

During the MLK riots in 1968, the Illinois National Guard put troops in the middle of the riot areas. They were assigned to stand under street corner lights with empty M-16’s and look tough. I would not expect much different today if the ILNG is deployed into the city.

“This is really not a mission for the National Guard.”

Precisely. What are their rules of engagement? The New York Governess says they can’t have scary rifles. If they are carrying handguns, are they issued any ammunition? Without martial law being declared and the Guard being issued weapons and ammunition, with authority to use them, this is no place for the National Guard.

Perhaps the uniforms alone are intended to scare criminals into good behavior? I don’t think that will end well.

I was "Regular Army" and I remember taking riot training at Fort Bliss in 1967. We were never deployed so, I don't know if they would have issued ammo or not.. But, the Guard sure got some at Kent State.! That pretty much ended the hippy movement.....I think.

What a surprise. The Democrats have weaken the police forces in big blue cites and their Soros backed DAs refuse to prosecute criminals so now it is time to start calling the military in to keep law and order in subways. With over 8 million illegal aliens ... not “newcomers” or “undocumented migrants” how long before they decide they are not getting enough free stuff and decide to just start taking it? I’ll bet the the Birdbrain administration will ask the UN to take over restoring law and order. Of course we will have to be a part of the “one world government” then.

The Kent State shootings really slowed down the campus riots. Real world consequences tend to do that. The first time some semi rolls over a bunch of protestors on the interstate might dampen that level of enthusiasm as well.

I think what ended the hippy movement was over-40's wearing bell bottoms and ponytails. Once mom and dad are doing it, time to find a new way to be different like everybody else your age.

Public transport in the US is a disgrace. I travel to Switzerland a lot on business and the trains and even busses there are a perfectly viable way to travel. Clean, on time, people sit quietly, no weirdos. I wonder when the last time there was a shooting or stabbing on Swiss public transport.

Would not take the subway, bus, or rail in any US city at this point.

"I'll bet the the Birdbrain administration will ask the UN to take over restoring law and order."

I believe that would be the worst possable scenario. Thereby making it the most likely to happen..
