A satire film intended to send a provocative message about race relations bombed at the box office on its opening weekend.
Focus Features' "The American Society of Magical Negroes" took the 9th spot at the box office last weekend, grossing $1,304,270 while playing in 1,147 locations around the U.S.
The film centers around a young man who is recruited to be part of a "society" where Black people use their magical powers to make White people comfortable, so that they don't hurt Black people.
The movie's title plays off a trope of Black characters in films who are set up to help White characters in their pursuits, like Michael Clarke Duncan’s character in "The Green Mile," according to a review from the Los Angeles Times.

Haven’t been to a movie in 20+ years.
Hilarious when she talked about “the Chief Joints of Staff,” and Rush picked right up on it.
How is this movie any different than the recent ratings of the South African leader?
1000 per location... ouch.
Ticket price across the country average is over $10 a ticket...
so that’s less than 100 people per theater....
Can’t find the production cost on this thing, but given even cheap films run 50M or more to make, and marketing budget is on top of that, and studio only gets 1/2 of ticket prices...
Even if this thing had a modest budget of say 30M and marketing budget of 10M, it would need 80M just to break even.
Realistically both budgets were likely higher than that...

Point taken. Or something.....😊👍
That's why white people are 16+ times more likely to be murdered by a black person than a black person is to be murdered by a white person, and why cops are 40 times more likely to be murdered by a black person than a black person is to be murdered by a cop.
Because white people are so much more dangerous than black people.
One of the greatest performances of all time.
And I’m fed up with it.
I still think about that one and chuckle every once in awhile. Rita X would fit right in with The Squad. She'd be the brains of the operation.
I sure miss Rush.
Sure it’s a hit compared to Reiner’s flop, but it’s still a financial failure if you’re drawing only $1,147.00 per theater over a weekend. Plus it’s unlikely to keep that box office at that rate. Things will only get worse from here.
I liked the Rush/Paul Shanklin version the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZyPaivOARM
Barack the Magic N**r0?
Guees what Hollywood?... There are no “magic negros”.
Yeah — but the film bombed because ordinary Americans, black and white alike, prefer to respect and get along with each other and work together for their mutual benefit and for the common good. Anything else is malignant and idiotic.
The Planet of the Apes did well
I remember some black agitator calling in, complaining about Rush’s relationship with Bo Snerdley. He wanted Bo to change his name, renouncing the “slave name” Rush gave him. in favor of something else. He suggested Jambo Jambone X.
***I would like to see a movie where black people help themselves.****
They already do. Every day they help themselves to goodies at various stores and walk out. Now some whites are also doing it.
I’ve been to two.
Ford vs Ferarri
The Boys in the Boat
Excellent movie. Saw it back in 1966 in the military. It was on TCM last a few nights ago. Got it on DVD.
Also got ZULU and ZULU DAWN.
