McConnell delayed replacing Scalia under the theory that no SCOTUS vacancy had been filled by a lame duck president in an election year. That’s not the case here.

Yes they are worried, but more importantly they need a “fight” to try to gin up support and engage their voters this fall.
Biden is a failure in every level, but they know Abortion can motivate and engage their base, so, look for Sotomayor to retire and then to try to creat a fight as close to the election as possible. It will be a made up fight, since they have the votes to appoint without the need for republicans but they will absolutely try to make it look like a fight to have something, anything, to try to create enthusiasm in their voting base.
