Clearly the quality of posts on FR has deteriorated over the past few years.
I suspect there are infiltrators trying to damage the cause. No, I do not suspect you of that. I just disagree with the extent to which the other police article is irrelevant to the discussion.
I think the best way to address this is to expose lies and be informative. When it comes to that I think you’re on the right side.
Oh. One other thing. I suspect that part of the problem with misinformation, netiquette, and “drivel” is some of the older members of FR are vanishing (mostly an unfortunate part of life as we all get older) and a new generation of much younger members is coming on board. Many of the younger ones are wet behind the ears. Many don’t read or listen too well. Many just want to hear themselves talk. But maybe if they stick around they will learn something despite themselves.
I suggest that it is now YOU who are doing exactly what you have accused me of doing.
Because I am likewise bewildered by your continued opinion, vis-a-vis, what happened to the girl in America and what, went on in RSA, perhaps we could take that to FRmail, where you could FULLY explain it all to me. As far as I am able to tell, it appears to me, that the ONLY common thread/s entwining the two things are 1)a female child was involved 2) police were involved 3) gunfire was involved.
You claimed that bringing up another recent article about police was hijacking the thread. I and others disagree. You chose to drag that issue out. And you continue to do so.
The debate you created has taken far more posts on this thread than the thing you were complaining about.
If that’s what you wanted, then you achieved your goal.
If not, you should learn from your mistakes.

I’m not the one upset by what others posted. I’m not even upset by what you posted. I’m just pointing out the consequence of your choice. If you’re happy dragging this out, then so am I. If your not happy about it, I am still happy. Not angry.

Oh there were several "WARS" here, in the beginning, flame wars too ( which THE BOSS THEN DECLARED TO BE AGAINST TOS !), but the personal attacks, name calling, character smearing, and worse were absent EXCEPT during the "ANTI-SEMITIC WAR", when that set of "baduns" were banned forever. I don't think that you were here for that "war".
Real debate skills haven't been taught in school for a long time, REAL political debates haven't been on T.V. for decades, and that might be one reason why the lack of quality posts have devolved; not to mention the perfidiousness of the content of the comments.
What I am is shocked by the inability of others to think critically and logically.

I don’t disagree that these two articles are generally unrelated. Two different countries. Entirely different circumstances. Different outcomes.
But when it comes to hijacking a thread, I think that is more of “hey, I just found a great way to make extra money. click here for more details.”
Ok. That may be an extreme example. But you gotta give people some latitude. Lots of folks just post a joke when they respond to an article. Lots just bookmark for later reads.
If I had your view I would have just told the person posting that the comparison was apples and oranges and moved on. It probably is apples and oranges. Not much of a comparison. But I don’t think it’s even worth pointing out personally. If you do, fine.
I still think the best way to deal with people getting off topic is to steer them back rather than fighting them about it. As you know, many only read the headlines but still feel the need to state an opinion (about something they haven’t bothered to become the least bit informed). I think even more engaged participants in most threads people don’t read past the first page, which is the first 50 posts, depending on your settings.
This is a more active thread. Unfortunately, a lot of the posts, including many of yours and mine, are not about the content of the article, per se. The article became more of a springboard.
Anyway, if I have been overly harsh or argumentative, it was not my intention. I wish you well FRiend.
