Russia's Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday it had deployed additional forces in the Syrian-controlled areas of the Golan Heights, where Israel had allegedly struck at an increasing rate over the last few months.
The forces, from Russia's military police, were tasked with de-escalating tensions in the Syrian provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, as well as monitoring the longstanding ceasefire issued as part of the Syrian Civil War.

I think the only thing that would motivate Putin to do this is if the Syrians threatened to kick them out of the naval base. That would be a huge, huge diminishment of Russia’s status. The whole Ukrainian adventure was about Russia’s, and therefor Putin’s status.
Putin is a gambler. His fallback plan is to double down and hit harder. He’ll keep this up until he can’t, or he slips in the shower and falls on some bullets. Whichever comes first.

I tried to think up an analogy. The south secedes. They decide they want to take over Ft. Sumter. Ft. Sumter was an actual fort, and it was on an island. But the south got it because supplying it was impossible. Same thing with Tartous except it isn’t an island. It’s a space separated by a couple of fences. Totally indefensible.
The recent terrorist attack in Russia has proven that they are not able to defend themselves from the seven to ten percent of their Muslim population, some percentage of which want the Russian overlords dead. Russia is totally committed to a war they’re arguably not winning. While Russia has assets that could be used to defend Tartous, they’re desperately needed elsewhere. What to do, what to do?
Anything Russia did in Syria would likely topple Assad and that’s something nobody wants, even the Syrians.
Back to the Russian action to slow down Israel. It probably won’t work, and Russia will back down and lick its wounds. Israel will try hard not to kill Russians, but they are angry, and Russia is not that committed to stopping Israel.
