A farmer farming thousands of acres, getting twice the corn yield of 60 years ago, (soybeans have maybe increased half that). Crop insurance for the possible bad weather year. Commodity price supports for the possible low prices.
Of course, owning at least some of the ground for several generations helps immensely.
Taxpayers are the ‘slaves’ of these modern ‘plantations’.
(Sidenote, concerning Deere and Company combine production: the plant is next door to Moline, in East Moline. Planters are manufactured in Moline though, which is also Deere world headquarters.)
