A Maryland high school teacher was arrested after he allegedly used artificial intelligence to create phony audio, planting racist and antisemitic words into the voice of his boss, authorities said Thursday.
Dazhon Darien, a physical education teacher and the athletic director at Pikesville High School, was accused of falsifying the voice of principal Eric Eiswert in January, authorities said.
"We now have conclusive evidence that the recording was not authentic," Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough told reporters in Towson. "It’s been determined the recording was generated through the use of artificial intelligence technology."
Darien was charged with disrupting school activities and other counts.
"As you could imagine, this has been a very difficult time for [the] Pikesville High School community, principal Eiswert and his family," Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Myriam Rogers said.
A judge signed on Wednesday afternoon an arrest warrant for Darien, who was caught Thursday morning at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Darien was scheduled to fly to Houston when security questioned whether he had properly packed his gun for travel, McCullough said.
Darien's name was run through police records, and the warrant showed up, leading to his arrest, McCullough added.
McCullough stopped short of saying whether Darien was seeking to flee.
Darien was also charged with theft, retaliation against a witness and stalking.

He was probably thinking on a small scale and was shocked when this became a national story and real investigators started looking into it. He imagined he’d slam the guy; the guy would be fired and that would be that. Had he gotten away with it, he’d have worked his way through the rest of the faculty until the colors suited him.
I’m not generally in favor of new laws as there are enough on the books that we all unknowingly violate one every day. But this type of fraud needs its own law.

Yes it can do that, and a whole heck of a lot more. It could be a good thing for many areas. But some of the downsides will be how AI replaces workers. It is already doing that to some degree - we have machines that do what labor used to do but they are relatively dumb machines either built or simple-programmed to do just one or two tasks. But it will get more serious because AI can learn to do any task. Check out some of the videos online there are humanoid robots with fingers and thumbs, “eyes”mmade of sensors and lenses that can see in mutl spectrum light etc - I saw one where the robot was asked to sort out trash and pick out from it what was still edible. It did. It was not trained to do that. It just tapped into a network and learned what was garbage and what was still edible. They can prepare a meal. They can stock shelves. They can fold shirts. They can make hamburgers and fries. Heck, Tesla AI cars drive themselves and do an incredibly good job at it. It’s not perfect but I’d bet it’s close to as good as most human drivers and will only get better. It is probably currently programmed to be extra cautious as it learns more and more predictive patterns.
Humanity and the political arena are nowhere near prepared for what AI is going to do to societies.
What this guy did was just mean and cruel and vindictive. I see he was charged with a crime and suspect he will also get slapped with a defamation suit by his victim.
Looks like a clear violation of 18 USC 245.
AI is still far from being truly intelligent. In fact the more I work with it, the less that I am persuaded that "AI" will have ANY iota of self awareness at all.
There is no replacing the heart and soul and pure creativity of the human condition.
There will be no such soul arising from the silicon or qubits or whatever of the computer realm. For all of their sophistication they are still just digits to be manipulated into something approximating usable output. AI is no different.
What AI is though is very advanced mathematics, set theory and logic to simulate the processing of input, based on internal code (the algorithms) and the data that it has been fed and continues to be fed by "experiences" such as text or images.
Unfortunately the math is getting to be almost TOO good. And we're going to see more stories like this.

Agree. When the recording came out, the Baltimore school district promptly fired Principal Eiswert, who was subjected to intense public backlash, death threats, and so on.
To this day, Eric has police guarding his home due to the harassment and threats against his family. The entire school was upended in controversy. PHS had to increase its police presence on campus to keep order.
Nail the chip-on-his-shoulder fraudster to the wall.
This is a capital crime. Destroying a person’s life is a death sentence.
The punishment MUST be the same as for murder. But I’m not naive. I know there is no way this will ever happen. The perpetrator of the fraud is non-White. The victim is White. The crime will go unpunished.
