A Memorial Service for Mr. Belk will be held at 11:00 a.m. September 27, 2001 in the Henry and Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. The Reverend Dr. Carl W. Dumford of Third Presbyterian Church, formerly of Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Internment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Belk was born in Charlotte on June 29, 1916, the eldest son of the late William Henry Belk, and Mary Irwin Belk. His father was the founder of the Belk department store organization based in Charlotte. Mr. Belk was the former president, and stockholder and director of the former American Trust Company in Charlotte, predecessor of the Bank of America Corporation.
Mr. Belk was a graduate of Central High School in Charlotte, attended Davidson College for two years, and was graduated from Duke University. During World War 11, he served in the U.S. Navy in Naval Intelligence from 1942 until 1945, attaining the rank of Lieutenant, j.g. At the end of the war, Mr. Belk returned to the government, all of his paychecks uncashed, with a note stating simply, 'It was an honor to serve my country'.
I've verified that at least three Belk locations in the state are unposted:
Sumter
Conway
Hartsville
But others are still posted.
