If you are trying to save the aircraft the last thing on your mind is letting the ground know you are in trouble. OTOH, the voice recorder will no doubt have the most common of pre-crash utterances: "Oh, sh*t!"

No one in government has said that it wasn't a terrorist attack. BTTT. Good point.

Regardless of one's political persuasion, FR provides one of the quickest sources of Breaking News anywhere. If you don't like the 'opinion' and commentary, just ignore it. I look for the news.

Do New Yorkers have the equivalent of the redneck who isn't overburdened with brains telling the local TV news about the tornado going through the trailer park and that he "seen the whole thing"? Wrong tense. Correct usage would be "Ah seed the whole thang"...

one of the pilots radioed in "mechanical"
I think Ari was talking about air-to-ground communications. The report of a "mechanical" was from another pilot in the area, may have been on another frequency.

OK, why not say "there's no evidence it was an accident"? Uh, there's a plane on the ground. That is a good sign of an accident. People are naturally concerned about terrorism. It is the first thing we think of. Responding to that concern is natural and the response right now is there is no evidence that it was.
Surely it should be treated as a terrorist attack until that is ruled out.
Why should it? What does that mean?
It's when they say they are treating it as an accident first, that people get suspiscious about their motivations.
Only people who are unnaturally suspicious of them anyway. Why do so many automatically assume there is even a motive to hide a terrorist attack? Stop being paranoid.
