Rush's Peter Gunn Bumper Music
Posted on 06/06/2002 5:47:31 AM PDT by MAEsser
Can someone give me a clue as to who the performer of Rush's "Peter Gunn" bumper music is? It's the music that starts out with a few bars of funky guitar riff, then Johnny Donovan comes in saying "You're in a Rush-groove, baby!" and then the bass guitar and horns come in.
It's a really sweet track and I would very much like to hear the whole song, but, obviously, being bumper music, only 15 seconds or so plays before it gets cut it off. I've already deduced that it's not ELP and it's certainly not Henry Mancini and his Orchestra. I'm absolutely lost with regard to other artists.
It's a shame; if I had a nickel for everytime he played the Pretender's "My City Was Gone." If there are any ideas, please post them.
Thank you. That is all.

In addition to the original Henry Mancini and His Orchestra, I believe that the Blues Brothers also recorded a version. In case your not familiar with them, the Blues Brothers were Dan Akroyd and John Belushi from Saturday Night Life.

I think Duane Eddy played the hot guitar licks.

Haven't heard the version Rush plays, but's it's probably the 1983 remake by The Art Of Noise, featuring Duane Eddy on the twangy guitar.

I just did a search on Google and the theme from Peter Gunn was included on several of the Blues Brothers albums which came out in the 80's. Given the other songs on those albums, I wouldnt be surprised if that is the version you are hearing on Rush.

I'll second Dave on Art of Noise. I like the original riff, but that is one cool remake. There are some links to it online on
this page, though I think my employer's firewall is keeping me from hearing it. )c8

It's Eumir Deodato. There, I think that's finally the correct spelling. His first album came out in the mid to late 70's with an awsome cover of the theme to 200, with Billy Cobham on drums. He also did the song that became known as "Luke and Laura's" theme from General Hospital. I think, it's been a long, long time.
Anyway, his stuff is fantastic. Top-notch.

Shelley Mann and His Men were the performers on the show's soundtrack. Mancini composed the theme -- one of the best short pieces of jazz ever heard -- but Mann's was the signature performance.
