Terror bombing kills 7, wounds 70 at Jerusalem university
By Jonathan Lis, Ha'aretz Correspondent, and Ha'aretz Service

A bombing in a crowded cafeteria at the Mount Scopus campus of Jerusalem's Hebrew University killed at least seven people Wednesday afternoon and injured at least 70, 14 seriously.

The injured were being taken to hospitals in the city, but the evacuation efforts were hampered by the location of the attack, inside a building on the campus.

In statement released to Al-Jazeera Television, the militant Hamas movement claimed responsibility for the attack, denying reports that the attack was a suicide bombing. Hamas has repeatedly sworn to avenge the assassination last week of its military commander Salah Shehadeh in an IDF air raid that also killed 11 children and a number of adult civilians.

There had been unconfirmed reports that the body of a suicide bomber was among the corpses at the scene.

"We still do not know about the exact number of losses," said deputy Jerusalem Police Chief Ilan Franco.

David Baker, an official in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office, said that "Israel is fighting a pitched battle against terror and for the right to walk down the street, take a bus or sit in a cafeteria without the fear of being
decimated by Palestinian terrorism."

Though classes were not in session, students were taking exams at the time of the blast, and the cafeteria, situated in the university's Frank Sinatra building, was crowded with diners. There were also numerous students in the building registering for classes for the coming school year, witnesses said.

"This was one place that I thought was safe," said a shaken and bloodied survivor of the attack, who identified herself as Anat.

It was the second bomb attack in the capital in the space of 24 hours. On Tuesday five people were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a felafel stand in downtown Jerusalem, near the border with the city's largely Arab eastern half.

The Mount Scopus campus is adjacent to the West Bank, and is close to Arab neighborhoods of the holy city.

The bomb was planted according to reports
___________________

This why Israeli police are chasing a car with yellow Israeli liscence plates. The implication is that Israel's Arab minority is involved. Not Arabs from Gaza or West Bank.

A planted bomb is worse since only Jews died although they say Arab students go to this university. Maybe some Arabs were also murdered.

When Israel does nothing, suicide bombers attack. When Israel cracks down, suicide bombers attack. When Israel makes concessions, suicide bombers attack.

Well from my vantage point, I give you two out of three.

Concessions = Increased attack rate
Doing nothing = steady attack rate
But when Israel Cracks down Always means far less attacks.

It really is proveable too, just check the news archives. Every time the territories are occupied, the terror rate drops to a small percentage of "usual".

I bet that if the territorys were bulldozed the terror rate would drop to virtualy nothing. Any takers?

How could it not have been spotted? Israelis have an ingrained reflex to run like hell from a hefetz chashood (abandoned package).

These are nervous college kids taking an exam in this Frank Sinatra cafeteria. They are understandably self concerned and don't notice the bomb package.

Story goes the bomb was left at the entrance to the cafeteria. Lots of flying glass. The package was very powerful and blasted away glass windows. Created much shrapnel.

If this does not work, declare war.

I think you and I are on the same page.

Today is my day for predictions. There will never be an independent West Bank. It is not a viable entity.

The West Bank is simply land from the original Palestine that has not been definitively assigned to Israel or Jordan. It is the subject for negotiation between Jordan and Israel, and no one else. If Jordan will administer it, and stop the killing, fine. If Jordan will not, and in point of fact, they want nothing to do with it, then Israel must do so.

In that case, West Bank residents have the option of living in peace under Israeli law, or leaving. Israel can pay them for their property, and compensate them for their removal, but they must go.

But the details of the settlement are subjects for negotiation between Jordan and Israel, and no one else. No one else is a party to the discussion, because no one else has any standing in it.

Most specifically, the UN and NGO organizations who are presently at work must either place themselves under Israeli supervision, or be likewise expelled. In the present circumstance, they enable the killing to go on. They must go.

I would agree to that when every bomb victim is paid $1million each first as these are direct intentional acts of murder.

At this point the PA is about $8 Billion in the hole.

It would be nice to see the media report this and the fact that Jackson was currently over there with Arafat. But I guess the networks has to protect their little adulterer/extortionist.

Perfect time for Isreal's retaliatory strike, then. No fatalities or crippling injuries, just a freak piece of shrapnel that strikes Jackson in the voicebox, stripping him of the power of speech forever.

I guess in his case, that would be crippling.

Agreed. Under the Marron peace plan, families of suicide killers can collect their compensation from the Saudis. To their new address in the Sinai.

What percentage of palis vehicles are actually purchased legally? My observation is that except for stolen cars, all the palis would be walking. Of course, that is a generalization.

Excellent commentary from the the shop yesterday, thank you.
