Action Alert: Website pretending to be the official White House website

The offending website is www.whitehouse.org | August 13, 2002 | myself

I questioned whether to put this in breaking news or not, but decided to do so because we need to get this website off the web ASAP.

I stumbled upon a website tonight that pretends to be the official WH website. The website says in very small print on a couple pages that it is a parody, but it is not clear enough to see unless you search for it. Frankly, I have been looking through the e-mail posted on the website and most of the people seem to believe it is the official WH website and are appalled.

Let me share some of what is on this site:

1. A nude picture on the front page

2. A game on the children's page making fun of Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's

3. A page detailing a WH policy plan to have a war on masturbation. Among other things, it says Bush supports female circumcision.

4. Altering photographs of the first lady

5. Various other policy proposals the site claims Bush supports

This site is sick. While we legally can't have it taken down, we should be able to make a difference if we contact the webhost. Interland.net is the webhost for the site. Maybe the host will decide to take down the site.

Please e-mail abuse@interland.com and demand the site be removed. Make sure to put the domain name and your major beef with the site in the subject field.

I would not have made such a big deal out of this if the page is not intended to dupe people into thinking it is the official WH page. But it has the look about it and only puts the parody information in tiny print. Many are getting fooled and have letters published on the site shocked at what the President is supposedly supporting on this fake website.

I looked at it and its a parody. It doesn't even claim to be a political website. Some people blow short fuses over nothing.

I recognize it is a parody. But it doesn't show that very clearly. It is set up to look like it is the real WH website and that is wrong, parody or not.

I do have a short fuse though....:)

I questioned whether I was making too big a deal on this or not. Part of me thought I was, but I just couldn't get over that.
