Well. Can we begin to think the office holders bungled again or is the perp merely laying low? Remember, "..in declining States the leadership intuitively choses the most harmful course of action..."(In short they bungle !) A Great Historian 1888.

Dinner-table conversation concentrates on what sort of person the sniper is, while at petrol stations people pump fuel while literally on their knees as they try to present as low a profile as possible. In the suburbs people report shoppers walking down the street in a zig-zag, as recommended by police. I was out shopping in Montgomery County this afternoon, and I didn't see anybody doing any of these things.

While police say that every day without a shooting is a good day, they also know that they have more chance of catching the killer if he strikes again. If he stops killing people, I can live with not catching him.

Some comments on the sniper, watching from far away in New Zealand. Serial killers usually have some type of pattern to their victim selection - race, gender, age, etc - unlike the DC sniper. They usually continue their killing until caught. They are driven by some very sick and dark compulsion to kill and are unable to stop. The sniper is not doing any of the above. Perhaps the sniper is a terrorist as many suspect. If so, then he/she is a "soldier" of sorts (although in a deranged army). Soldiers have the discipline to follow their orders meaning that the sniper could stop killing at any time and leave the area or move on to something else, unlike a serial killer. My personal opinion is that the sniper is a terrorist rather than a sicko serial killer. And look at the terror and panic now in the DC area - the exact goal of terrorism. What do others think?

What great historian said that? Burckhardt?
To: joonbug
"What do others think?" The same as you.

Terrorist cell(s).

No. However, Burckhardt is one of the biggies!

A caller to Chris Core's radio talk show on WMAL last night pointed out that the sniper started shooting the day after Ari Fleischer made his "single bullet" comment about killing Saddam. Since Chris Core then said he had thought of the same thing, I assume the caller was right on the chronology.
I believe this is all directed at our political leaders in Washington, and that the shootings, like the anthrax, are meant to deter an attack on Iraq.

I tend to agree, if it were a looney, he would keep shooting, that is how they get thier jolleys.
He, she, it or them, seem to be very dedicated to thier mission. Looneys are looneys, and tend to continue upon thier chosen path until they are apprehended, or turned in by a fiend or family member.(Granted there are exceptions)
Hope you are enjoying your beautiful spring weather. I was lucky to be in Tahiti during January a number of years ago, beautiful area of our world. Tom

I think that way, myself. And whether or not he's a genuine terrorist, the effect ( terrorism ) is the same...

I agree with your observations. This person is or persons are highly disciplined. Leads me to believe that they are organized and have a well thought out plan. Our government does not want people to panic, so they are down playing the terrorism angle.
Any way you look at it, it is terrorism and it is having the desired effect. I expect that this is just the beginning.

Muttly quite used to Siege Mentality. Muttly live in Fun City.

Good observations, joon. I have heard several professionals state the same thing on TV--this perp is too disciplined to be a lone crazy. He has all the earmarks of a soldier on a mission. Maybe the mission is completed now, and he has returned to his handlers to be debriefed. Since this one-man campaign was so successful in instilling fear and terror into the hearts of thousands, and has disrupted the economy temporarily in one large area, it may be deemed a viable model for the next incursion.

My Gosh. Will the list of "experts" touting the 'American Serial Killer Profile' ever lessen?
...(says) Professor Alan Fox, an expert in criminal justice at Boston's Northeastern University... "The sniper is clearly getting his satisfaction...
Really? How does he know that?
... He did not kill these people for who they were...
He's probably correct there from a micro point of view. But, how about if they were widely identifiable as "Americans" going about their daily routines?
... (they) were just targets of opportunity whom he killed to advance his dominance, power and control."
More psycho-babble. The Perfesser is just guessing, and getting three paragraphs for his tutorial effort.
No sign of "terrorist" motivations or behavior acknowledged, even though the behavior would perfectly fit their patterns.
I guess we can just all go back to sleep and continue to blab about our own home-grown sicko murderers a little complacently rather than face all the horrendous possibilities?

Me either.
Other than the gas stations playing the Macarena over the loud speakers it's quite normal. I personally prefer doing the funky chicken from my car to the store on the theory that even terrorist don't shoot nuts!
Actually the only change in behavior I have noticed in Maryland and DC is that people do look around at their surroundings more carefully and make walk slightly more briskly than before. Which I think is a reasonably smart thing to do. I have yet to see zigzagging and ducking anywhere. Could be some are, but I don't think it's wide spread.
To: joonbug
You make too much sense to be a journalist or a TV commentator. My guess is that he's laying low or has been extracted or awaiting new orders. Can anyone tie the start of the shootings to reports from "Osama Bin Laden"? It may be a drop signal to begin predefined attacks.

Other than the gas stations playing the Macarena over the loud speakers How is the Macarena supposed to combat the sniper? Just curious!
