Senate: N.J. And Texas Get Tossed Out Of Toss-ups (Texas goes GOP, NJ goes RAT, sez CBS News)

N.J. And Texas Get Tossed Out Of Toss-ups: The CBS News Election and Survey Unit has decided to change the status of the Senate races in New Jersey and Texas. We now believe that the New Jersey Senate contest between Democrat Frank Lautenberg and Republican Doug Forrester is leaning Democratic. Meanwhile, the Texas Senate race, between Republican John Cornyn and Democrat Ron Kirk, is leaning Republican. That will leave six Senate races - Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri, New Hampshire, South Dakota and Minnesota - in the toss-up column.

A CBS News/New York Times poll conducted last week showed Lautenberg leading Forrester, 48 percent to 36 percent among likely voters. Fifteen percent were undecided. Among likely voters who have not yet made up their minds, half classify themselves as independents. In a hypothetical race between Forrester and the former Democratic nominee Bob Torricelli, Forrester leads 42 percent to 37 percent, with 17 percent undecided.

In Texas, Kirk's early promise has faded a bit. After holding a small lead in public polls this summer, he now appears to be trailing Cornyn, the state's attorney general. Democrats are still hoping that a big turnout among Latino and black voters will boost their dream team, but Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Sanchez is also lagging behind his Republican opponent, Republican Governor Rick Perry.

There is no hope at all in New Jersey?? Did they ever get a chance to debate, or will they? It's pretty sad they have to prop up these older guys to stand-in, replacing ones in their 50's. A younger Senate is what we need, we already have several who seem senile!

I can't speak for New Jersey, but the Texas race has never been in doubt in my mind. Kirk is going to get trounced.

We never have elected a black inner-city mayor to the Senate, and Texas is not going to be the first state to do it.

Don't give up hope yet. The following is from todays Washington Times:

The battle for Democratic Sen. Robert G. Torricelli's seat, who dropped out of the New Jersey race after a gifts-and-cash scandal decimated his poll numbers, is getting tighter, too. A Mason-Dixon poll showed Republican Doug Forester running six or seven points behind former Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg. Republican polls showed the race even tighter than that.

DG..... It seems that the winds have finally shifted to the Repubs on these two races. I'm still not sure about the Lt. Gov race.

The Sanchez campaign has been working hard. I've gotten two telephone calls and a knock on the door from them in the past four days or so.

the race goes to the swift SOBs. . .unfortunately. Only MO and SD are really close per last info I saw, so looks like the RATS pick up Senate and GOV spots.

Yep a couple of polls showing Mondale up but still within the margin of error. But they expect a bump when the announcment is made maybe Wed. They were expecting media play and maybe the Wellstone family standing in support of Mondale to give him a bump. Also stated that Coleman would keep a positive campaign during the remaining days when he started back.

Yes, and one week before the 2000 elections, just about everybody predicted a Bush electoral landslide.

Then, late in the week, the Dems pulled out a drunk driving incident.

Things have a way of changing, and even one week out, you can't call the close races definitively.

Hume is correct (unfortunatly). It's more fitting to be the "bug" rather than the "windshield". The pubbies play their part in this "Two-Party Cartel" as good losers. Of course the real losers are us - for supporting these mamby-pamby pubbies. 77% of us want ILLEGAL immigration stopped. One pubbie(Tancredo) carries the message & is DISOWNED by his party.

Didn't you mention a week or two ago something about some news coming out in the NC senate race? Something that could change things? Whoever it was, he was very cagey about it....
