5,000 expected at Clinton's appearance

Bill Clinton will be visiting an old haunt when he returns to McArthur Court for a Halloween "get out the vote" rally.

The former president will be the featured guest at Thursday's noon gathering, a fund-raiser for U.S. Senate candidate Bill Bradbury. The visit marks Clinton's second visit to Oregon this year on behalf of Bradbury, the Democratic secretary of state who is facing an uphill battle against incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith.

It also marks a reunion of sorts for Clinton, who greeted a boisterous crowd at the University of Oregon basketball arena 10 years ago this month on his way to unseating incumbent George Bush for the presidency.

Thursday's gathering won't match that year's overflow crowd, but organizers and university officials say they expect as many as 5,000 people to show up. "This is more Clinton country than Bush country - on campus, anyway," UO spokeswoman Gaye Vandermyn said.

About 3,000 tickets have already been distributed, including about 1,500 free tickets snatched up by UO students, said Kim Baldwin, communications director for the Bradbury campaign.

Baldwin urged people to order tickets in advance at Fastixx to avoid any last-minute rush. Doors will open at 11 a.m. for the noontime rally, and people should come early for the best seats, she said.

At the request of the Secret Service, backpacks and other carry-ins will not be allowed inside the building. A check station for backpacks will be available at the Student Recreation Center on campus.

Eugene police have been asked by the Secret Secret to "provide resources" for the visit, but can't disclose details, police spokeswoman Pam Olshanski said.

Tickets for adults cost $25, with proceeds going to the Bradbury campaign.

The rally is intended to spark the UO student government's get-out-the-vote campaign and motivate Democratic voters generally.

For the most part, the partisan speakers will be preaching to the choir. "But when you get your choir working for you, there's nothing like it," Baldwin said. "They're the ones who are going to knock on doors, work the phone banks, make sure people send their ballots in."

Aside from "some Draculas I put on our press passes," the rally won't have a spooky theme despite falling on Halloween, she said. "The scariest thing we'll do is talk about Gordon Smith in the Senate for six more years."

Normally this is what happens on Halloween here:

Police prepare for trouble on Halloween

Me thinks ol' Bubba Blubbahead Clinto heard about the traditional riots on the UO campus and is looking to find a shapely and drunk coed or two to tear up street signs with.

I could see him leave Mac Court to smoke a spliff or two in the cemetary across University Street from there before he headed off to Alder Street to bum some dank Oregon green bud before crashing any one of the normal out of control parties in that area.

Quick! hide the wife, daughters and kitty cats! Where do you guys think the IPOTUS will be partying in the People's Republic of Eugene?

I myself will be studying all the faces of overweight guys with dready wigs scateboarding badly tomorrow.

If he is still in his middle age crisis that got him squeeze time with old Monica, he could be anywhere on campus tomorrow. ;-)

Eugene, Oregon is unusual in that it is very much legal for women to be topless. Of course, if Clinton can only tolerate women who shave, or wear make-up, this can actually be a minus for him.

In any event, it figures a perp like him would chose a party oriented campus to spend Halloween at. I bet he won't be dunking for apples.

If the Oregon Dem voters had any character, they'd boycott Bubba's appearance after his grandstanding at the Wellstone Pap Rally.

But this is Dem's we're talking about. In fact, the size of the crowd will probably double!

Great effect, but you can't fool me. I know he not only doesn't throw a shadow, he doesn't give off a reflection either. This year we in Eugene get to have a genuine monster inflict himself on us.

Happy Halloween.

"Police have learned from several sources of a rumor currently circulating that a man tried to post fliers at local businesses, urging people to riot on Halloween."

Could it be possible there are outside agitators interjecting themselves into the mix here? Certain people just much rather riot than bob for apples.

>> he could be anywhere on campus tomorrow

Well maybe he'll be down in west university for the annual halloween riot. It'd be fun to see him cuffed & hauled into the can like a common hoodlum. Won't happen though - he'd be well recognized by the local establishment, who we'll all know because they will be the ones gathered around him awaiting their turn to put their li

McArthur Court - the Pit.

Wonder what the rent check is for that place for a day, and if it's being collected. Wonder also if they charge a deposit to ensure the sinks and such are left clean.
