I went to my 25 year high school reunion a few years ago (I'm not saying how many). The reunion was organized by a company that specializes in setting up class reunions. They prepared a nice preprinted booklet with a directory of all of the former students that they had been able to locate along with an "In Memorium" section listing the students who were now deceased. One of the deceased students came to the reunion and was very surprised to find her name listed as dead.

Born-again Christians will appreciate this:

Recently I ordered USC's new Alumni Directory in order to look up my freshman dorm roommate and his down-the-hall buddy, both of whom witnessed about salvation through Jesus Christ to me, without apparent success then. We drifted apart over the next several years and lost touch altogether. I found them in the Directory and wrote to them recently to let them know that their witnessing to me was one of many steps in God's eventual success in bringing me to a saving faith. They were both overjoyed at my good news, and I was pleased to find they are still walking with Him!

So, I too came back from the dead for them after 35 years, in a spiritual sense.

So we have moved Fred's name off the deceased list into that amorphous group of those still living. For the 50th reunion, I suggested that I could wheel him surreptitiously into the gathering sealed in a coffin, where at the right moment, he can pop up with gusto, back from the dead. A riotous idea, no doubt, if only he can stay alive for another 10 years.

I can picture it now... the coffin... the rising Fred... the heart attacks...
