A half dozen pro-life protesters stood outside St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing during Sunday services to demonstrate against Gov.-elect Jennifer Granholm's position on abortion.
The group, called Stop Granholm - Church and Truth Project, disagrees with the Diocese of Lansing's decision to host an interfaith prayer service at the church on Inauguration Day on Jan. 1.
Granholm has said she is personally opposed to abortion but supports abortion rights.
"It sends the wrong message," said Monica Migliorino Miller, the group's director. "She surrounds herself with the proper Catholic symbols to appear like everything is fine with her but it's not."
Michael Diebold, the diocese's spokesman, said holding the service doesn't mean the church is endorsing Granholm's abortion stance.
"This is a day for churches in the area and people of faith to come together and pray for our duly elected leaders," Diebold said.
The same group has held weekly demonstrations for the past six months outside Granholm's church, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth Township, Migliorino Miller said.
Others in the religious community support Granholm's stance.
"Jennifer Granholm is an extremely good example of what we are trying to preach," said Rev. Robert Frederick, co-chair of the Michigan chapter of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. "It's a matter of choice."
The Stop Granholm group has said Granholm's decision to have an interfaith service at St. Mary - which will include different religious leaders from across the state - instead of a traditional Mass was due to pressure from Catholic protesters.
Granholm's staff has denied that.
"They certainly have a right to protest," said Granholm's spokesman Chris De Witt. "But (Granholm) believes ... it's an excellent way to kick off her term as governor.
St. Mary's parishioner Barbara Smith said although she is not pro-choice, she doesn't fault Granholm for her stance. And she doesn't mind the ceremony being held at her church.
"I don't believe there is anything wrong with her celebrating in her church," Smith said.

Granholm protesters gather at [St. Mary's !! ] cathedral- Self-Declared Pro-abort Catholic Governor is scheduled to hold Inaugural Service on Holy Mary, MOther of God's 's Feast Day!!!!]
Imagine "The Religious Coalition for Choice'' -- The "religious propaganda arm" of Planned Parenthood et al" is complimenting The Roman Catholic Diocese of Detroit for hosting this self declared pro-abort Catholic Governor's interfaith service at of all places -- Detroit's Saint Mary's Cathedral !! Named in Honor of Our Blessed Mother -- Who said YES to God -- and became the Mother of Our Savior Jesus Christ.
Meanwhile "The Religious Coalition for Choice" and Planned Parenthood are lobbying against Catholic hospitals,Catholic doctors and nurses, charities, and other institutions (They won in New York State -- with a supposedly self-declared Catholic Governor signing off on this abomination) who seek "Conscientious objection" instead of participating, cooperating or funding such things as abortion, sterilizations, and birth control devices (many of which are abortifacients. Will "voluntary" euthanasia be next?
So now, Ms. Granholm can post on her website http://www.granholmcherryinauguration.com/topics/events.htm the fact that there is on
Wednesday, January 1, 2003 8:00 a.m. Inaugural Interfaith Service St. Mary Cathedral, Lansing RSVP >> Please Call 888/875-0055
while true and faithful Roman Catholics are celebrating world-wide The Feast Day of Mary, The Mother of God and a Holy Day of Obligation!
I weep that there were only "half-a-dozen' who protested this travesty but I also send my thanks to those why stood in my place because I live out-of-state.
I urge you to speak out against this abomination and blasphemy and IN-YOUR-FACE-CALUMNY-against our Blessed Mother and Her Son -- the Babe in the womb -- we Catholics are all preparing to welcome on Christmas Day.
Please register your concerns to Cardinal Maida and your local press and if you live in Michigan -- I beg you to Stand up for our Infant Jesus and His Holy Blessed Mother at her Cathedral!!!
What part of "I knew you when you were in your mother's womb" does Rev. Robert Frederick not understand?
I suggest we all drop Cardinal Maida an email letting him know we don't agree with Mr. Diebold.
Here are two email addresses for the Archdiocese of Detroit.
The Communications Department can be reached via comm.dept@aod.org
The Project Life Department can be reached via ProjectLife@aod.org
If you send an email, please send to both addresses. You'll get a nice reply from the Project Life Department.
