Veiled immigrants suffer in sunless climates

Stockholm - Immigrants in Sweden, in particular women who wear headscarves, run a greater risk of developing health problems due to the lack of sunshine during the long winter months, doctors here said on Friday.

Many immigrants to Sweden do not drink cow's milk or eat fatty fish, foods that contain vitamin D which is necessary for building strong bones. The lack of sunlight during the winter compounds the problem further, as sunshine helps the body produce its own vitamin D.

Not only do women from hot countries traditionally stay indoors much more than Northerners, but when they do venture out, the wearing of a veil or headscarf allows too little of Sweden's pale winter light into their eyes and onto their skin, doctors said.

Endocrinologist Maria Saeaef at Stockholm's Karolinska Hospital, quoted in Sweden's largest daily Dagens Nyheter, said a growing number of young women who have emigrated to Sweden from North Africa and the Middle East suffer from rickets.

Daylight hours can be as few as six during winter Rickets is a deficiency disease that affects the young during the period of skeletal growth, characterised especially by soft and deformed bones, and is caused by inadequate sunlight or vitamin D.

Those affected in Sweden "are often young women who have just given birth to one or several children in recent years and whose bodies have therefore experienced extra strain", Saeaef said, noting that pregnancy and breastfeeding draw calcium out of the skeleton, worsening the situation.

Rickets can be treated with vitamin D and calcium supplements.

In Sweden and other Nordic countries, daylight hours can be as few as six during winter.

The low levels of sunlight are also known to lead to higher-than-usual levels of depression, alcoholism and weight gain among Swedes as a result of binging on sweets to lift spirits. - Sapa-AFP

Sadly, you don't understand that you are not being oppressed but infact the OPPRESSOR! YOu are as guilty as the cold- hearted Swedes (no pun intended). Your white skin that allows you to absorb vitamin D is the method you use to oppress those who come from warmer climes.

Ice People, especially the blond and redheaded Nordic types are pale for a reason! They have to make as much Vitamin D as they can, with the minimum possible exposure of skin. So if your skin is not pale, and you cover most of it up, you may very well suffer from vitamin D deficiency. Easily corrected these days, but I'm sure the male Swedes would just as soon those dusky beauties de-veil.
