State Sen. Bill Hardiman plans to join the Legislative Black Caucus, even though he may not have a whole lot in common with them, politically speaking.
Hardiman, a Kentwood Republican who is black, would be the first member of the GOP to become a member of the black caucus, which always has been made up of Democratic black legislators.
"I'm looking forward to it," Hardiman said. "Obviously, I'm African-American and we hold some of the same roots and cultural views. But I think I can bring some perspective that might be different than theirs. I think we'll be able to grow from it."
Members of the black caucus said they will welcome Hardiman.
"I'm so excited about Mr. Hardiman joining," said Rep. Artina Hardman, D-Detroit, the chairwoman of the caucus who is seeking re-election. "It will be the first time ever to have a Republican in our caucus, so we are very excited. We look forward to his input and leadership and participation."

"The notion that all blacks think alike -- even among Democratic blacks -- is untrue, said State Sen. Samuel "Buzz" Thomas, D-Detroit."
After years of watching Charlie Rangle and Maxine Waters trundle out to represent black lawmakers I'm tempted to give these quotes zero weight...
However I've noticed that the 'rats are pushing Ronnie White, slandering Charles Pickering, and promoting class/race warfare with a draft proposal. It seems to be all they are talking about.
Why are the 'rats choosing race-baiting as an issue to the exclusion of minimum wage, welfare, or abortion. It maybe they fear Republicans are making inroads to getting black voters. It may just be they think they are in danger of blacks staying home. Another possibility is that polls are showing Republicans are most vunerable on the issue of race and exploiting it will energize the lib base and scare 'rats into donating to the DNC.
I'd like to think after the overwhelming condemnation of Trent Lott by Republicans we may be at least getting a second glance from black voters. I can't seem to find the thread here at FR, but a black Dem in Georgia recently switched parties, although I'm not sure if he was a state rep or a congressional rep.
50 years ago most blacks voted Republican. It will be a fine day when the majority of black voters return to the party of Lincoln. I believe it will happen someday.
