There won't be another shuttle built.
There are afew second and even third generation shuttle designs that are to be used. My guess is that the development of these systems will be a top priority. I hope so.

As streets at air bases are named after fallen pilots, future spacecraft could bear the names of fallen astronauts.

After the Challenger accident, I always thought a great name would be Phoenix

When they name the next vehicle, they'll stay away from anything beginning with a "C" ...

How about Free Republic?

Astronauts are brave people, but Courageous sounds like a Royal Navy battlecruiser from 1916. I have nothing but respect for the Royal Navy, but I wish NASA would stick with the mythology names for the space program.

I would think either the Yorktown, Intrepid, Constitution, or Enterprise would be cool names, however, I think there is going to be need for a replacement for the Shuttle asap.

I suggest no more names starting with a 'C'. They seem to be bad luck.

How about "Infinite Justice"? *grin*
SW Fans: Executor? Chimaera? (er, there's that C again)
Have we named something after Nathan Hale yet? That would seem kind of appropriate however macabre...

Like Portnoy, I agree that Phoenix would be a good name. IIRC, John-Allen Price wrote a late cold-war thriller that had that as the name of the Challenger replacement. Not a bad novel, actually.

I would propose it as a "next-generation" craft, using the more advanced technology proposed for the shuttle replacement & the "space plane."As for names, I'd propose:
Liberty
Freedom
Patriot
Independance
Constitution
Constellation
Courageous
Eagle
Republic
Excalibur
Excelsior

3. that it's name be Courageous. Not that I'm superstitious but, I don't think I'd be putting another "C"-word on the nose of a new shuttle.
To: aruanan
The other names suggested here are good, but I still like Enterprise.

Why not try something innovative?
Just like we do with sports stadia, sell the naming rights to the highest bidder.
It'll help defray the construction and operating costs.
