HOT COMET: Comet NEAT

HOT COMET: Comet NEAT (C/2002 V1), which is perilously close to the Sun, has entered the field of view of SOHO coronagraphs. The comet has grown spectacularly bright in recent days and its tail is many times bigger than the Sun itself. (continued below)

On Feb. 18th, the date of closest approach or "perihelion," Comet NEAT will lie just 0.1 AU from the Sun--well inside the orbit of Mercury. (The radius of Mercury's orbit is 0.4 AU.) Will the comet continue to brighten? Break apart? Or fizzle out? Stay tuned and find out.

It says "stay tuned". They don't know what will happen to it when it passes the sun. Possibilities are: It will be destroyed, it will break into pieces, it will have a double tail, nothing will happen to it.

  Here Nostradamus advises of the approach of a great comet. It will pass low over southern France, raining debris on the Earth below for three nights. But the nucleus of the comet is headed for the Aegean area after flashing directly over Rome.

    The dust cloud from the explosion of Nostradamus' comet will have grievous effects throughout the Northern Hemisphere ("the length of the arctic pole"). The burst spews vast areas with carbon dust, precipitating heavy carbon-laden rains and attendant crop failures. The second half of the verse is fascinating since it seems to describe a space tug -- the only thing that would be located a hundred leagues (about 300 miles) from the hemisphere. "Samarobryn" is some sort of coded designation, maybe an acronym. This space vehicle -- no doubt Russo-American -- is in orbit when the comet hits. The occupants, of course, would be insulated from earthly politics.

Thanks for the ping Riley. Got Verizon site back up, and now I need to finish the observatory so I can take some more images. Slow going with design problems and design decisions to be made. I don't think it will be finished until early summer. Thanks.... I sincerely appreciate all your help.
