Fidel Castro and Yasser Arafat: Partners in Terror

By Agustin Blazquez with the collaboration of Jaums Sutton

In 1941, as a student at a Catholic school run by Spanish Jesuit priests who were sympathizers of Fascism at that time, the young Fidel Castro was looking for his ideology.

Displaying a fascination with power, war and domination since childhood, Castro discovered Fascism -- and promenaded around campus with a copy of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf in his armpit.

According to many fellow students, "the crazy," as he was nicknamed, mimicked the speeches of Hitler and Mussolini speeches in front of a mirror, practicing their mannerisms hour after hour. When Castro entered the University of Havana in 1945, he soon joined a gangster-type group and carried a pistol, so he could impose his will.

When Batista's 1952 coup interrupted his political ambitions, Castro decided to fight against him and on July 26, 1953, he attacked the Moncada Barracks, an isolated outpost of the Cuban Army in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba. The attack brought Castro national attention, but at the cost of the lives of about 100, including soldiers being treated in the infirmary -- executed execution-style as they lay in their beds.

This event became the inaugural cornerstone of Castro's personal technique for attaining his goals.

But Castro does not get credit for creativity with this assault since it mimicked Hitler's November 9, 1924, insane attack on the War Ministry in Munich, which made him a national figure in Germany. Castro's attack and the highly publicized trial that followed in the Cuban media, was highly successful in his own eyes since, like Hitler, it made him a national figure on the island.

Castro's self defense and speech ending with "history will absolve me" were similar to Hitler's Rathaus Putsch speech in 1924!

And in 1953, Cuba's leading magazine, Bohemia, selected Castro among twelve of the world's most outstanding figures.

Like Hitler and his Fascists, soon after grabbing power in 1959, Castro began eliminating people by summary executions, jail, concentration camps and exile; destroying them before they could become enemies. By 1960, he had effectively crushed the Cuban free press, including Bohemia magazine (whose owner went into exile and committed suicide out of guilt for helping Castro take over Cuba). Soon, the over 200 private radio stations and about 7 private television networks and all other institutions of the Cuban civil society fell under his absolute control and freedom was totally eliminated.

Many Spanish-speaking Sephardic Jews from the Balkans and Palestine immigrated to Cuba before World War I. In the 1920s and 30s, many Polish Jews settled in Cuba after being refused entry into the U.S.

Other European Jews fleeing Hitler went to Cuba as a waiting place for entrance in the U.S. Once refused entry into the U.S., many stayed in Cuba. They like the friendliness of the country and its free enterprise system and opportunities. Many Jews opened businesses, schools, community centers and synagogues. Many married Cubans and prospered in the 1950s economic boom. According to the Puebla Institute's 1991 Castro's War on Religion, the number of Jews in Cuba was about "30,000 at their peak and [was] reduced to 15,000 by 1959. Most of those fled to the United States after the revolution."

Jews, acquainted with Hitler and the Nazis, were concerned by Castro's similarities. They foresaw what was coming and warned others. Castro's unbridled anti-Semitism, from his Hitler admiring days, soon led to the expropriation of all assets of the thriving Cuban Jewish community, driving them into exile.

By 1967, around 2,000 were left 96 less than 1,000 today, most of them elderly. Many joined the growing Cuban exile community in Miami, New Jersey and other places, where they share the same opinion of Castro with other Cubans in exile. Maybe that's the reason why the U.S. media has neglected them and most Americans ignore what they went through.

Fascism had become unacceptable thanks to the magnificent work of the victims of the Holocaust and the Jewish community worldwide. So, after the fiasco of the Bay of Pigs invasion due to President Kennedy's betrayal, on April 1961, Castro publicly declared himself a communist. In spite of Castro's obviously Fascist techniques, this was done for his own convenience because Marxism (communism) has become the darling of the prevailing left intellectual elite and the media.

Examples of Castro's Fascist techniques include the creation in October 1960 of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, modeled after the Nazi ones in 1930s Germany.

These neighborhood committees, created for spying and controlling the population in each city block, are still active today. The creation of the Young Pioneers was modeled after the Hitler Youth to indoctrinate the children beginning in elementary school. The Young Pioneers are still active today. That's why Cuban exiles were so offended when Castro sent the "school teacher" with the other kids dressed in the uniform of the Young Pioneers to indoctrinate Elian Gonzalez on U.S. soil!

In January 1966, at Havana's Tri-Continental Conference attended by communists, revolutionaries and worldwide terrorist organizations, a resolution was passed calling for the breaking of all treaties with Israel, total economic and cultural ostracism of Israel and its expulsion from all international organizations.

In November 1966, Castro opened more than a dozen guerrilla training camps under the direction of KGB Col. Vadim Kotchergine -- where Palestinians were trained in techniques of terrorism.

And in 1967, after Israel's Six-Day War, Cuba's U.N. Ambassador, Richardo Alarcon 96 portrayed as a "moderate" by the U.S. media 96 called the war an "armed aggression against the Arab people . . . by a most treacherous . . . surprise attack in the Nazi manner."

In October 1973, Castro broke diplomatic relations with Israel after he deployed thousands of Cuban soldiers including helicopter pilots and tank crews to fight alongside the Syrians during the Yom Kippur War. How many Israelis did Castro's soldiers kill?

To insult Israel and the Jewish people even further, Castro gave the PLO an expropriated Jewish community center in Havana.

On November 14, 1974, Yasser Arafat was enthusiastically received in Havana and given Castro's foremost decoration: the Bay of Pigs Medal.

On May 30, 1978, Reuters news service confirmed (11 years later!) that PLO personnel had been trained in Cuba and on September 13, the Egyptian newspaper Ahar Sa'ah reported that 500 Palestinians were leaving for training in Cuba.

Does anybody know how many Palestinian terrorists and suicide bombers Castro trained in his camps and how many innocent people have been killed as a result?

No surprise, from the 1970s to today, Jews have been scorned in Castro's controlled press.

Paradoxically, according to Irving Louis Horowitz's Preface in David J. Kopilow's Castro, Israel and The PLO, the Jewish intellectuals and organizations in the U.S. "were in the forefront of singing the praises of Castro."

But with Castro's background of anti-Semitism, his decimation of the Cuban Jewish community, his plotting against the state of Israel and his connections with the PLO terrorist wing, it was puzzling and insulting to the Jewish community, including the Cuban Jews in exile, when Israeli's Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau visited Cuba in 1974.

Incredibly, on that occasion Lau said of Castro, "he is a great friend of the Jewish people. Anti-Semitism is extremely hateful to him."

Hello . . .?

Myles Kantor, in his article Passover in Cuba, criticizes Jewish organizations in the U.S. like the B'nai B'rith and American ORT for looking the other way about violations of human rights of the Jewish community in Cuba, and for the years of silence in the face of Castro's crimes.

Kantor asks of these mainstream organizations, why don't they "demand the emancipation of their Cuban brethren?"

"On the contrary," Kantor says, "they pour copious dollars into the regime through 'humanitarian missions"where they stay at luxurious hotels from which ordinary Cubans are excluded. They taste rum and cigars at the Hotel Nacional and feature a photograph of the fatigues-clad pharaoh."

Kantor says that the behavior of these Jewish organizations is a "disgrace."

Keep in mind that Castro's Cuba has been designated as "terrorist" by the U.S. State Department for many years. Cuba shares "honors" with six other rogue nations: Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea and Syria -- all virulently anti-American.

Obviously, Castro is in partnership with international terrorism. And this partnership is bonded mainly by anti-Semitism.

Is Castro a Nazi? He calls 'right-wing' leaders 'Nazis' regularly, especially President Bush (which may explain the Bush is a Nazi namecalling from Castro fans in the US), yet if you read Goebbel's own propaganda, Castro sure sounds and acts like a Nazi - a Nationalist Socialist. He is a terrorist-supporting, self-proclaimed Socialist who adopted Marx and Communism when it became culturally unacceptable to support Hitler (and 'chic' to be a Commie) and is clearly a racebaiter, poverty pimp, exploiter, liar - leftist opportunist who prays on the weak "for their own good".

"Fascism had become unacceptable thanks to the magnificent work of the victims of the Holocaust and the Jewish community worldwide."

David Horowitz has well-documented the fact that, for example, this part of the story, is not accurate. Only portions of the "Jewish community worldwide," deserves such "thanks." Because there are too many cells of Jewish socialists in the "Jewish community worldwide," who continually, and even stridently, bargain with fascist socialism.

I don't know anything first hand about Castro's youth, but I suspect that this is a vicious distortion. The Jesuits were among the Catholic victims of the Communist Republicans, who made a point of shooting priests, so it's understandable that they supported Franco. Franco placated Hitler, but he kept him at a distance, kept Spain out of the war, and never really supported the Axis effort. Spain was essentially neutral.

That presumably explains why this article says that the other students called Castro "El Loco" for running around with a copy of Mein Kampf and spouting Nazi drivel in front of mirrors.

It is confusing, but I think the author's right about the Spanish Jesuits admiring Fascism, Franco's political ideology. Fascism was closer to Communism and Naziism than the Catholic Church could see at that time.
With the war won by Franco and his Fascist and clerical associates inside and outside Spain, Pope Pius XII sent the following message to the victors:
"With great joy we address you, dearest sons of Catholic Spain, to express our paternal congratulation for the gift of peace and victory, with which God has chosen to crown the Christian heroism of your faith and charity, proved in so much and so generous suffering.... the healthy Spanish people, with the characteristics of its most noble spirit, with generosity and frankness, rose decided to defend the ideals of faith and Christian civilisation, deeply rooted in the rich soil of Spain. As a pledge of the bountiful grace which you will receive from the Immaculate virgin and the apostle James, patrons of Spain, and which you will merit from the great Spanish saints, we give to you, our dear sons of Catholic Spain, to the Head of the State and his illustrious Government, to the zealous Episcopate and its self-denying clergy, to the heroic combatants and to all the faithful, our apostolic benediction.", (Voice of Spain, March 22nd, 1941.)

The admiration was mutual and General Franco paid open tribute to the devoted Spanish clergy " who efficiently collaborated in the victorious crusade and spiritualised the glory of the Nationalist arms." The Fascist Leader's tribute was not a matter of mere words either. For today the control of the Church over Education is complete. Franco re-introduced the financial subsidies of the State to the Church by re-establishing the last Ecclesiastical Budget under the Monarchy of 1931 (65,000,000 pesetas a year), and even augmented it with a special allocation for the repair of seminaries, libraries and churches. The property of the Spanish Jesuits was restored. Legislation which had been passed by the Republican Government excluding Roman Catholic priests from teaching in the schools was annulled. Divorce and civil marriage were both abolished. Laws for the protection of the family were passed which fixed severe penalties for abortion and which illegalised all establishments or centres devoted to birth control propaganda. In these ways, Catholic coercion once more became rife in many forms.

It is confusing, but I think the author's right about the Spanish Jesuits admiring Fascism, Franco's political ideology. Fascism was closer to Communism and Naziism than the Catholic Church could see at that time.

After Castro took over power, those Jesuit priests left Cuba and continued that same school in Miami. I graduated from that school and some of the older priests that taught Castro also taught me.

Those priests did not see the Spanish Civil War as "Fascism" vs "the Spanish Republic". They saw it as "Communism" vs "the Church and Spain".

I remember their stories of the Communists burning Churches and executing Catholic clergy.

Did Franco accept military aid from Hitler? Sure he did. Nobody else offered aid and he took what he could get. In World War II, the U.S. gave massive aid to Stalin, not because the U.S. was Communist but because it was necessary to win the war.

Franco was not a Fascist ideologue. He was an anti-Communist Spanish nationalist.

To judge Franco, don't look to who he took military aid from when he was at war. During war, you take aid from whoever offers it to you.

To judge Franco, look at his actions during World War II when he kept Spain out of Hitler's control and used Spain as a safe haven to save thousands of Jews.

Thank you, Polybius. Were the Spanish Jesuits tough on you? G Gordon always says that there is no better place to learn to think than from a Jesuit Priest. "You learned whether you wanted to or not."

The author of this article confuses Fascism with Naziism, calling Hitler a Fascist...but really, they are similar ideologies, as is Communism.

If you check out Castro's current speeches - which he gives often, and in front of international adoring crowds (UN) - he uses the term "Nazi" to describe President Bush, yet closes his speeches with, "Socialism or death! Homeland or death! We shall overcome!" National Socialist -> Nazi.

A young Fatherland will rise when the socialist front is firm
Socialism will become reality when the Fatherland is free. - Joseph Goebbels

Thank you, Polybius. Were the Spanish Jesuits tough on you? G Gordon always says that there is no better place to learn to think than from a Jesuit Priest. "You learned whether you wanted to or not."

Well, they weren't just Spaniards. The Jesuit Fathers at the school were a mix of Spanish-born, Cuban-born and, the strictest ones of all.....

the Irish-born. :-0.

The Spaniards had mellowed in their old age, the Cubans were pretty cool and laid back but there was one Irish Jesuit you didn't want to cross.

We learned that the first month of school as 7th graders back in the mid 1960's. One kid was acting up in the way he had acted up back in parochial school once he got bigger than the nuns. "Mr. Hickey, come up to my desk,", said Father O'Brian calmly. (They always called us "Mr." and our last names.) Mr. Hickey smuggly strutted up to the front of the class. When he got there Father O'Brian gave him a good hard slap across the face and told him to sit down and behave himself as a gentleman should in the future. No more problems from Mr. Hickey. Or the rest of us either, for that matter.

Back in Cuba, the school building was very impressive and, nowadays in Miami, the school infrastructure is very good as a result of alumni donations.

However, back in the 1960's, the school was run out of an old remodeled warehouse on SW Eighth Street and Seventh Avenue in Little Havana. We had no playing fields. We had no showers. We had no fancy equipment of any kind. The students were mostly Cuban refugees from families that had lost everything in Cuba with our parents struggling to earn a living however they could.

And yet, there was something special about those "Hard Times" in that school that money can't buy. Out of our graduating class of 30, we now have 5 M.D.'s, Ph.D.'s, architects, CPA's, attornies, a Judge, business owners, my financial advisor, etc. The class behind us produced the current Mayor of Miami.

The moral of the story is that quality education is a matter of hard work, discipline and dedication and not a matter of throwing money at the problem.

For an article about the school, look at the follwing link: Belén Jesuit: Class Act
