If Chirac said this, I'd bet within an hour, he was on the phone to Bush saying, "I know what I said, but it's not what I meant...." If Bush could project his steely eye-squint/glare through the phone, you can bet Jacques would shrivel up on the spot.

Were they ever in it? I mean, on our side, in it?

The last good thing I heard from France was when I found out that the September 12, 2001 front-page headline of Le Monde was "WE ARE ALL AMERICANS" in HUGE letters. That sentiment didn't last long, apparently.

>>>Chirac is falling on sword for Saddam. Is he in love with Saddam? <<<

I have read somewhere that Saddam backed Chirac's initial run in politics, as mayor of Paris. Anyone confirm this??

sounds like al queda has been in touch with the french: "support the US and we'll come after you too. play nice and we'll leave you alone. " I remember back in the days of Libya and Khaddafi there was a story going around that the terrorists had a similar deal with the french. Not a surprize at all for them to cave like this, not a loss either
Sure would be nice to get that deal confirmed by a captured al queda. I'd love to see Powell in front of the UN with that piece of news.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.....

STATEMENT BY THE SPOKESPERSON

Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
Paris, France

4 September 2001

Q: Can you confirm that the United Nations has just given France approval to build a telephone exchange in Iraq? And what can you say about the efforts to prevent these contracts with Iraq from presupposing a system of kickbacks as in the past?

A: With regard to you first point, I'll have to find out.

As for the second, we are of course continuing to discuss the implementation of the oil-for-food program within the relevant U.N. agencies, and the point you make is part of the aims to improve this program and how it functions.

Q: The Iraqi foreign minister said yesterday that Iraq values its relations with France--a somewhat different tone to that of a few months ago between France and Iraq. Why the change and what's your response?

A: Naturally, we paid close attention to the comments by the Iraqi foreign minister. If this indicates that France's point of view is being heard and better understood in Iraq, that is something we can only welcome. Why the change? That's a question for the Iraqi authorities. As you know, our position regarding Iraq has not changed and we continue to take the same line. The French line has been the same for a good many years.

I believe the Dubya already knows, and that's why Chirac has his pink panties in a twist.

Maybe there are some nasty photos of Jacque getting friendly with a female of another species in a dossier in Baghdad, but it is a certainty that he's on Saddam's payroll and has been since the 70's.

There is a desperation in this talk and behavior by one of the most experienced politicians in France that leaves me concerned about our president's safety. There is something about all this that is not right and, all facetiousness aside, I'm a little worried about what is so terrible that the French don't want the world to find.

Chirac" If U.S. Attacks Iraq, We Are Out Of War On Terror"

This is not the kind of war you can just opt out of. If France stops helping us (did they ever start?), then they're still in the "war on terror", but they're in it on the side of the terrorists. Even doing nothing aids the terrorists, and France knows it.

And so do we.

That's great news! That means they will no longer protect and support terrorist cells in France!

We can bring France to heel with an economic attack. We did it in '56 over Suez.
