A Father's Mindset Is Liberated (What It Means To Be An American)
The Los Angeles Times ^ | 04/14/03 | Elizabeth Mehren

Like many in what he termed "the knowledge class," he had devoted little thought to the workings of the military. He was content to view protecting the country as a job for other people's children.

Then he had to come to grips with his son's decision and found himself on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. It forced Schaeffer to confront the prejudice against military service held by his wealthy and well-educated acquaintances — people just like him. Schaeffer encountered widespread ambivalence — even outright antagonism — among those men and women, whose own grandfathers considered it an honor to serve their country.

If its not your job, you haven't realized what it means to be an American. Once upon a time the Marines were held to be the embodiment of all that it meant to be an American. May it be that way again, once you've read how novelist Frank Schaeffer's mindset was liberated upon learning that his son John joined the Marines and how it made his family and his country proud. A good read into how even liberal intellectuals learn what they thought about the military can be changed once they see the big picture. Semper fi!

"He calls himself "just another yuppie fascist snob."

Ah, isn't it wonderful when self-discovery is so darn accurate.

A wonderful article by someone who has been hit by a clue stick. The Marines and the armed forces are the epitome of selfless, egalitarian, national service. What is it that the liberals dislike about that? Oh, that they promote the value of love of country and a strong America.

I urge everyone to follow the link to the LA Times. I want freerepublic.com to show up on the "referred from" list when analyze their site hits. Then JimRob can subpoena these records during his counter suit to reclaim his legal fees. ;) Or least, make them feel queasy that FReepers are visiting.
