Dear HBO:
I am writing to inform you of my plans to cancel my subscription to HBO. I will not support your company if you are going to pander to the anti-American Hollywood crowd. Bob Costas has invited Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon on his show to make a political point. That is his right. I am now exercising my right to cancel my HBO subscription.
Loyal Americans will not forget those that spoke out against America in its war on terrorism. I will also forward this to other like-minded Americans that will follow suit and express their contempt for these people via their wallets!

Sportscaster Bob Costas says officials were wrong to nix the upcoming event in the wake of anti-war statements by Hollywood stars Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, and he's looking to stage the event on his own cable TV program.
Costas says he's invited the stars of the film to appear on HBO's "On The Record" "not to talk about the controversy, but re-create what they would have done up in Cooperstown."

They sure do. Wasn't that awesome? I have the set of DVDs, and I feel like watching them now - thanks for the reminder.

Why would anyone subscribe to H-BO in the first place I did it for the Sopranos, plain and simple. But since the last season of the Sopranos was a disappointment, and I've rarely found anything else on HBO worth watching, I ain't renewing.
To: Right Wing Professor
Sopranos too. Howie Carr discussing this now.

If it's because of a "long history" they shouldn't have been invited at all.
To invite someone, knowing what they are, and to then un-invite them because of what they are, is idiotic.
Sorry, but they really screwed this one up. They should have never made the invitation, or made it without including a speaking engagement.

...right up until he made the remark about the Constitution being an out of date old parchment that needs to be updated... That's odd. I took that statement to mean something totally different. He said we need to hit the "Refresh" button on the Constitution. I took that to mean that he thinks that we need to look again at what it really says and take the words for what they mean. Not what someone says they mean.
As for the gun statement, he said he believes in gun ownership but that the sheer numbers of guns needs to be reigned in. In my opinion that doesn't make him anti-2nd Ammendment.

You're exactly right. I would add that by subscribing to HBO you are in a fashion subsidizing Hollywood because, if I understand HBO's output right, their main bill of fare is movies.
I don't subscribe to cable or satellite TV services anyway. There are many more interesting ways to entertain oneself. The two that come immediately to mind are books and FR.

I'm not sure if it was on HBO (I think it was), but I really liked the 12-hour miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon", which first aired four years ago or so.
To: ECM
I didn't write that they were.

To invite someone, knowing what they are, and to then un-invite them because of what they are, is idiotic. Agreed. The Hall of Fame may have lost their enthusiasm for the event after Kevin Costner turned down an invitation. They would have been better off just cancelling the whole thing.

I do have to question though, to how many levels of indirection are you going to take this? If Costas wrote a book, would you boycott the stores that sold it? It could get ridiculous after a while.
It could get ridiculous....but it could also be fun for a while.
I was determined to keep Streisand's politics separate from my enjoyment of her music...
...then one day I finally got so sick of her hateful comments about Bush....I smashed her CDs.
More recently I taped over a Streisand concert video with news about the Iraq war.
I simply could care less if I ever hear or see anything from this woman again. I was a fan but she's turned me off totally.

BOB was a great book and series! Thanks Tom Hanks! I have the dvd! I cannot support someone that openly provides a forum for Tim Robbins. He is an anti-American puke. He's free to say what he wants but whines when people counter.

It was. And it was the reason I first signed up. I stayed for the Sopranos, and Band of Brothers, but we pulled the plug when we stopped watching it much. I look forward to season 4 of the Sopranos on DVD.

my letter:
I guess I cancelled HBO JUST IN TIME! I WILL not renew as long as you support the anti-American Hollywood crowd.
If it is true Bob Costas has invited Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon on his show to make a political point, that is his right. I am now exercising my right to never watch HBO again.
More to talk about at work with everyone. More e-mails. I am sure you will get more cancellations! (OUR rights!)
Thank you
I cancelled my redbook magazine this month cause it had sarandon on the cover. Time to mean business! hah!

I was watching Costas on Leno when he said that the HOF was wrong to "disinvite" Robbins. I immediately turned off the tv. My brother made the mistake of asking me the next day if I'd seen Costas on Leno because he had a couple of good one-liners. Boy, did I give my brother an earful of my new opinion of Costas and his ilk!
