Me, I end up being a thorn in their side just by being there.
Not that I care what they think, rather the opposite - I'm there for the art, and just by existing in the same local area as they do seems to frost their shorts to no end.
I did get mean and ask the question, "Why can't we just be here for art?"
I got seven "hear hear's", and about five icy stares.
The rest of the room seemed oblivious.
At least two of those were working on sketches or paintings.

Dude, I'll be straight wi' ya. I don't understand most artists. In general, I don't understand anybody who doesn't realize the profound significance of 6 * 10^-34 J*sec. I guess I'm kinda dense that way, especially if the politics are deplorable. At least my crowd has some modicum of rationality in life; I would speculate that I would find your crowd unbearable. Nice to meet an artist-type with more than just background frequency going on upstairs.
