Archaeologists find 6,000-year-old statuette in Sumperk area
POSTRELMOV, North Moravia, Aug 1 (CTK) -
Archaeologists have found a unique about 6,000-year-old statuette of a human head from the Neolithic period near Postrelmov, archaelogists' team head Vladimir Gos said.
The statuette, which probably served ritual purposes, was discovered during the archaeological exploration before a planned construction of a highway in the area, Gos added.
"We have uncovered a number of valuable findings, but the statuette is definitely the most important one. It proves that people from the local Neolithic settlement devoted their time to spiritual life," Gos explained.
He said that he expected the statuette to be a part of a vessel, used for cult practices, which had probably belonged to the village shaman.
Apart from the statuette, archaeologists have also discovered some pottery, stone and flint tools and parts of furnaces.
Gos noted that the findings would be displayed to the public in the Sumperk Museum in about a year.
The team of archaeologists has been working in Postrelmov since May and they will complete their exploration in mid-August.
The Neolithic, or "New Stone Age," in Central Europe dates from 6,000 to 3,500 B.C. It is associated with a change from hunting and gathering to farming and settling down in the first villages.
The most famous archaeological finding in the Czech lands is probably the Vestonice Venus, about ten-centimetre-long statuette of a "plump" women. It was found in Dolni Vestonice, south Moravia, by professor Karel Absolon. Its age is estimated at 25,000 years.

Another "date" for Clinton? Does it really matter to him if they were human or not?

Its age is estimated at 25,000 years. It was probably carved a few years ago by a hobo who found some 25,000 year old material.

"It was probably carved a few years ago by a hobo who found some 25,000 year old material." I don't think we call them hobo's anymore, they're now 'homeless.'
I think the firing in the kiln 'fixed' the 25,000 year old date.

What is a Hobo? They placed it in the counting chamber of the alpha particle spectrometer for 72 hours. The final ratios of uranium to decay products suggested that the carved surface of the ivory may be about 26 000 years old.
Something just doesn't sound right about that.

The book The Civilization of the Goddess: The World of Old Europe by Marija Gimbutas is full of pictures of the tools, pottery and 'ritual figurines' that have been found in Czech, Slovakia, Poland, etc. Very interesting read if this is your speed!
