A skull belonging to a 'mystery ape,' on the left, is placed next to a chimpazee skull for comparison. Researchers say the mystery ape is much more 'flat-faced' and substantially bigger.

We cannot rule out the possibility that it is a new species of ape, or a new subspecies or some form of hybrid.

What is this? Hoax (looks like a gibbon or monkey skull held closer to camera to give illusion of being larger than chimp skull)? Is is something new? Something old just discovered by science? Kin of Homo Habilus or some other hominid

If this thing is a Hybrid of a Chimp and a Gorrilla, than why would it be larger than a Gorrilla?, since the Gorrilla is already larger than a Chimp. You would think that its size would be in between the two.

All other living apes are represented in the fossil record. Where is this thing?

Such pairings "can throw a monkey wrench in our idea of species," Louis said.

No, such pairings (even successful in vitro fertilizations) can give insight into the common ancestry between the animals involved.

Speaking of beer ... I'm looking at a newspaper clipping that says that Cheetah, the chimp pal of Johnny Weissmuller, Lex Barker, and Ron Ely is still alive and is 64 years old. His owner, Dan Westfall, who lives in Palm Springs, California, says he feeds Cheetah 11 pints of beer a day. "And once a month, as long as he behaves himself, I give him a few bottles of schnapps." This chimp isn't alive, he's just preserved. But if it's British beer, then Cheetah needs a friend. Anyone have a large chimp suit I could borrow?

I don't think it is a gorilla-chimp hybrid because, as some of you have pointed out, it has traits that are NOT intermediate between the two (size, bipedalism). The Mazori Lion may be a Leopard-Lion Hybrid, but they display intermediate traits.

If it is in the fossil record, then its would have to be panthropus, or homo habilus or some other hominid that has hung on in the jungle. Interesting that its DNA is tentatively chimplike. THat could show who its closest relative is....

Do you think they are one and the same? This thing looks (unless it is a smaller hoax skull) more like Panthropus than say, neandertal, but why P. as Nephilim?
