DAY TWO In Manhattan, the sun is rising but the lights are still out.

Commuters sleep on the steps of the Post Office on 33rd Street and Eighth Avenue in New York during the early hours of Friday, after being stranded by the city's electrical blackout.

A huge power failure swept through parts of the Northeast, Midwest and Canada on Thursday, shutting down trains, subways and airports from New York City to Detroit, forcing people into the streets.

At the ferry terminal on west 38th St., thousands of people without access to the subways and trains flocked to catch ferries, creating another form of gridlock.

Passengers on the downtown A train were stuck underground for two hours before being led out by MTA employees.

Waterway buses to Weehawken were filled to capacity.

Transit workers escorted riders off a subway car on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Pedestrians clogged the Brooklyn Bridge as the power outage brought life to a standstill.

Dozens of people at the Lincoln Tunnel jumped on a truck to get a ride through the tunnel to New Jersey.The police made them all get off the truck.

The hallways of Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan were dark after the blackout. Power generators lit emergency and patient care areas.

The whole of the city was dark and the setting sun painted one building.

Since being trapped in a brutally hot subway car himself many years ago, Muttly has not ventured out of his lair without at least a good knife and flashlight on his person. What one finds in darkened subway tunnels can border on the unpleasant.

But the Long Island Rail Road reported no injuries among the 1,000 passengers trapped in the 4:04 to Babylon, which left the station just minutes before the power failed. Brian Dolan, a spokesman for the railroad, said the train was stalled under the East River with no cool air until 6 p.m., when a diesel train was able to tow it back into Penn Station.

Donna Romano, a passenger, said it felt like a sauna. "But we couldn't open the windows," she said, "because it was worse outside than it was inside."

The former actor, whose father was a member of the Nazi Party, declared martial law and had electricity and water shut off in all major cities. This morning, he signed an executive order making it legal to shoot Jews and homeless people. Fellow actor Mel Gibson, whose father denies the Holocaust, was quoted as calling this "a good start." President Bush, whose great uncle's seventh cousin five times removed owned slaves, has yet to take a position on the California reforms.

Correct. Muttly only take busses when in Fun City. At least you can escape. Those people are fanning hot, humid, smelly air at themselves. Muttly no like Mine Disasters, personally. Now, unless he dug the burrow himself, he stays above ground at all (most) times.

I sure hope he got heckled. I was a tad peeved this morning to hear the talking heads comment on his show of leadership during this crisis when the first thing he did was to hold a televised press conference in order to reassure millions of residents who could neither see nor hear him due to a lack of electricity that everything was under control and advise them to check and make sure their refrigerator doors were closed.
