Leading Consumer Advocate, Howard Metzenbaum, with 25 State Consumer, Gun Control and Public Health Groups Call on Congress and President Bush to Strengthen and Renew the Federal Assault Weapons Ban
National and State Groups Demand President Bush Keep His Promise To Support Legislation Before the Assault Weapons Ban Expires, September 13, 2004.
Washington, DC - Retired Senator Howard Metzenbaum and Sonia Wills, mother of bus driver Conrad Johnson, the last victim of the Washington, DC-area sniper attacks, were joined today by 25 state consumer, gun control and public health advocates to announce the launch of a year-long effort to renew and strengthen the federal assault weapons ban due to expire September 13, 2004.
Modeled after California's 1999 Assault Weapons Ban, the speakers voiced their support for S. 1431, sponsored by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and H.R. 2038 sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY). The legislation would not only renew the law, but would also strengthen provisions to ban the manufacturing of "post-ban" assault weapons like the Bushmaster XM-15 used by the Washington DC-area sniper.
"Unless Congress and President Bush work together to enact new legislation, UZIs, AK 47s, and a list of other bargain basement military-style killing machines will flood America's streets again," said retired Senator and Consumer Federation of America (CFA) Chairman Howard Metzenbaum. "The existing law is so weak that scores of slightly modified versions of assault weapons banned ten years ago are legally and freely available."
Although President Bush has stated his support for renewing the ban, he has not yet taken action on its behalf. The speakers are calling on the President to stand behind his words. "The American people will not take kindly to a Congress and President who buckle under to the extreme demands of the gun lobby by letting the law expire or simply reenacting the existing weak ban," said Metzenbaum. "The hour has come for President Bush and Congress to once and for all rid America's streets of these weapons of war."

" Ross already took care of "Senator Katzenbaum" in UC." LOL
If I were to write a novel, there would be quite a few that would receive similar care. A good friend says that the media whores are really the ones who deserve it though and would, if the fecal matter ever hit the round, rotating and oscillating device, be only too happy to take note of Claire Wolfe's admonition on timing and act on it.

My take on this is - look to the source of the 'bad ideas'. Places like, oh, say, Coluumbia University. Remember the one who wished 'a million Mogadishus' on our troops? I do. Remember the ones who defended him? I do.

How many times over the last 100 years have "assault weapons" been used in the commission of violent crimes in the United States? Now, how many times have baseball bats been used in a similar role? Anyone want to bet which tool is more commonly used for mayhem? Truth means nothing to those who want to ban all privately owned firearms. The only way they have been able to get their agenda this far is to lie and lie some more.
My Congressmen and the President will receive several more letters from me about this subject. I will not vote for anyone who supports the ban of privately owned guns.
This is America. We own guns here and if someone in this country doesn't like it, you can move elsewhere.

We require assault weapons to defend against Federal child abusers:
Kofi Annan's security carries this H & K MP-5 without BATF approval.

"Maybe I should send him a copy with "his" words highlighted." Just finished the book, Travis. Just as the clock struck midnight. May I say you are one helluva writer, and one helluva dude, Dude. :->
Many phrases in the book are priceless. This one hit the button and needs to be highlighted here:
"Will you be worth it?"
In a greater context, I think all of those, up to our present-day military -- those who have sacrificed their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor in defense of our liberty, our country and our Constitution are asking this generation the same question. We shall see what the answer will be.
A great book, Travis. It's got more legs than a centipede. Thanks.

I'd love for you to freepmail me (no spoilers on the thread) about what you thought of the outcome of the last 2 chapters.

Actually, that's a big motivating factor in writing this novel: it's a warning to the 'rats about what will happen if they push too far. I wrote it so that its popularity will (I hope) spread beyond the conservative gun culture, even to the antis. It's fair warning, and my attempt to head off a "super Columbine" by showing that it will NOT have the desired results.

Because I was cruising past 600 pages, I cut out a scene where Pete Broker ("The Most Believed Man in America") is reading the nightly lies on CBA News, and the studio blows up and the feed goes black.
Five minutes later the fill-in anchor is on the air from Studio 89.
But the book was too long, so Pete Broker didn't get it.

I really love some of those scenes in my movie-camera mind.
I see that nameless dude in the hunting boat, with the helmet and one-eye NVG rig, punching the throttles as he leaves them, saying, "Just be worth it!"
I have to say, it would make a hell of a movie.

Mr. Metzenbaum, this is why you are not the president's Chief of Staff. If so, Bush would be lucky to make it through his FIRST term, let alone get reelected for a second.
