Leading Consumer Advocate, Howard Metzenbaum, with 25 State Consumer, Gun Control and Public Health Groups Call on Congress and President Bush to Strengthen and Renew the Federal Assault Weapons Ban
National and State Groups Demand President Bush Keep His Promise To Support Legislation Before the Assault Weapons Ban Expires, September 13, 2004.
Washington, DC - Retired Senator Howard Metzenbaum and Sonia Wills, mother of bus driver Conrad Johnson, the last victim of the Washington, DC-area sniper attacks, were joined today by 25 state consumer, gun control and public health advocates to announce the launch of a year-long effort to renew and strengthen the federal assault weapons ban due to expire September 13, 2004.
Modeled after California's 1999 Assault Weapons Ban, the speakers voiced their support for S. 1431, sponsored by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and H.R. 2038 sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY). The legislation would not only renew the law, but would also strengthen provisions to ban the manufacturing of "post-ban" assault weapons like the Bushmaster XM-15 used by the Washington DC-area sniper.
"Unless Congress and President Bush work together to enact new legislation, UZIs, AK 47s, and a list of other bargain basement military-style killing machines will flood America's streets again," said retired Senator and Consumer Federation of America (CFA) Chairman Howard Metzenbaum. "The existing law is so weak that scores of slightly modified versions of assault weapons banned ten years ago are legally and freely available."
Although President Bush has stated his support for renewing the ban, he has not yet taken action on its behalf. The speakers are calling on the President to stand behind his words. "The American people will not take kindly to a Congress and President who buckle under to the extreme demands of the gun lobby by letting the law expire or simply reenacting the existing weak ban," said Metzenbaum. "The hour has come for President Bush and Congress to once and for all rid America's streets of these weapons of war."

Short of the "third box" option, conservatives have to be willing to stand on principles at the ballot box. "Moderates" will never get the message that they must move to the right if they always get the "lesser evil" vote no matter how they act. Yes, it is something of a MAD approach but this constant seeking the middle so the party can "do the right thing after the next election" means the next election always remains the next election. And tomorrows R's become indistinguishable from yesterday's Ds
But until conservatives realize that a R(ino) victory is a pyrrhic victory there will never be a way to stop the move to the left.
Yep. $49 box set, delivered, as I recall.
Yes, it is a major feature improvement over 6, and 6 was no slouch, as you know. The current release 8.01 has a few stablity problems but nothing major. I expect they'll release a patch soon. JASC makes one of the finest software products out there, IMHO and they really listen to their customers. Your humble correspondent sent in a sugestion for a feature to be incorporated into v6 from v5 and it showed up in the release - and I'm no heavyweight user.
There are several pro-WOD FReepers also support gun control.
Ooooo - I bet they don't like you on the "day in the life of Saint George" thread :-)
Did Metzenbaum read my book already? That's almost word for word what my fictional President says to the nation after the Stadium Massacre.
No matter who pulls the trigger, or why.
I'm sure you're right. But after lurking on some of the Arnie threads, I'm convinced there are a large number of people who'd vote for the antichrist if he paid dues to the RNC. (And no, I'm NOT comparing Arnie to the antichrist < /obligatory tighta$$ disclaimer >
The "party line", if you'll excuse the expression, is "you'll elect a Demo if you don't vote fix-it-later-Rino". They've convinced me that they'll be electing a Demo if they don't retain the conservatives. And, frankly, judging by the "limp members" in the Senate and House, if the three-branch-majority yields the domestic spinelessness we're living with, maybe they need to be the underdog to put some fight back in 'em. It's sad to say but in seems there's nothing quite so useless as a Republican fighting for something - their finest hours sadly come when they're fighting against something - or so it seems of late.
Does this have any affiliation with Consumer Reports?
That's exactly what I thought when I read it.
Matt, I got my copy and started to read it yesterday while donating at the blood bank. I can't wait to pick it up and start reading it again.
It could also be that anti-gun liberals are utterly predictable parodies of themselves.
Up to page 454, it just gets better and better!
