A man accused of biting off his brother's lip this week had been arrested on domestic violence charges twice before, according to Metro Court records.
Derrick Gordy, 27, was arrested Thursday after police saw him try to stab his father, according to a Metro Court criminal complaint. Gordy's brother also told them Gordy bit off his lower lip.
In 1997, a charge of aggravated battery against a household member was dismissed. A charge of battery against a household member in April 2001 earned Gordy a deferred judgment with a sentence that he seek counseling, according to court records.
This time, Gordy's bond is set at $140,000 for these charges: two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a household member, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, child abuse and intimidation of a witness, according to the complaint.
From a St. Joseph's Hospital bed, Darrell Yazzie told police Gordy bit him after an argument between the brothers turned physical, according to the complaint.
"Darrell's lip was missing, showing several teeth and the jawbone," the complaint states. The police interview with him was brief because he was "in considerable pain."
Emergency room staff at the hospital told police Yazzie would have to undergo plastic surgery, because the missing part of his lip could not be reattached.
When police arrived at the residence around midnight Thursday, they saw Gordy attempt to stab the father, the complaint states. Police used a stun gun to get Gordy away from his father.
By that time, the complaint states, Gordy had already cut his father's left cheek with the knife.
Others inside the house during the fight told police they feared being assaulted by Gordy.
During the altercations, a woman and her 2-year-old daughter hid in the closet. The woman told police she was "afraid of Derrick and that Derrick was going to stab her with the knife," the complaint states.
When police interviewed Gordy, he told them "he bit Darrell's lip," but other events that happened that night were "unclear due to intoxication," the complaint states.
