Santo faces surgery for tumors

Legendary Cub Ron Santo said Monday he has to have surgery to remove tumors from his bladder.

During an interview on WGN-AM, Santo said a recent physical found blood in his urine and that doctors then discovered the tumors. The tests showed the tumors were contained and doctors were optimistic about his prognosis, he said.

The nine-time All-Star planned to fly to Phoenix to consult with doctors and hoped to have the surgery by the end of this week.

"I feel once they get those (tumors) out, I'll be fine," he said.

Considering the Cubs are postseason winners for the first time since 1908, Santo said the surgery comes at a bad time, but it's necessary.

Chicago opens the National League Championship Series against the Florida Marlins at Wrigley Field Tuesday. They have to win the best-of-seven in that series to make their first World Series appearance since 1945.

"Maybe I can be back for the World Series. That's what I'm hoping for-- actually hoping and praying for," Santo said.

Santo was absent Sunday from Game 5 of the Cubs' division series against the Atlanta Braves. He also was unable to fly to Atlanta for the first two games of the series.

Now that the Cubs have advanced in the playoffs, WGN officials will look into having Santo watch games on TV from his Arizona home and comment on them on the radio with his play-by-play partner, Pat Hughes.

Santo had tried to explain his absence from the first two games by saying he was having routine tests for his diabetic condition that couldn't be rescheduled. But given that Santo would move mountains to attend any Cubs playoff game, that coverup rang false from the beginning.

Steve Stone worked those first two games as Santo's replacement, and Dave Otto took over Santo's role for Game 5.

Santo said he is reluctant to discuss his condition because he doesn't want to divert any attention from the Cubs' playoff run.

''I don't want to take away from what they are doing,'' said Santo, the Cubs' former star third baseman whose No. 10 was retired in a pregame ceremony Sept. 28. ''But something is going on.''

Given that Santo has had both legs amputated at the knee in the last two offseasons, there always was concern he would face an uphill battle medically.

Santo will have another medical test today in Chicago before departing for his Arizona home.

As a player, Ron Santo was one of my boyhood heroes. He still is one of my heroes, for his courage and optimism.

GO CUBS!

I wanna see the Cubbies and Red Sox in the world series. Then one of their night mare will end in a world championship not known since the 19-teens!

Sorry to here that. I played sandlot baseball with both Ron and his sister for many years. Other than Ron, his sister was the best ballplayer in the neighborhood.

Ron Santo was the best NL 3b of the 1960s and early '70s. And in the history of baseball, he's probably about the sixth best 3b of all time (after Schmidt, Robinson, Brett, Mathews, and Traynor). Santo belongs in the HOF.

Former Chicago Cubs star Ron Santo, center, talks to Cubs fans after his number was officially retired before the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, in Chicago. Santo joins Ernie Banks, left, and Billy Williams, right, as the only Cub players to have their numbers retired.

Billy Williams, Ron Santo, and Ernie Banks formed the heart of the Cubs order. For nine seasons, 1961-69, you could pencil them in as the # 3, 4, and 5 hitters every day--literally! They were in the lineup together for well over 90% of those games! (I was fortunate enough to see most of those games, either in person or on TV.)

Banks and Williams are in the HOF. Santo ought to be.

Ernie Banks was also a hero of mine- not simply because of his athletic ability, but because of his on the field and off the field personality.

He sent his kids to the same summer camp I went to as a child. And he treated everyone there with kindness and respect, having grace and patience with everyone there.
