The 1962 Missal Epistle and Gospel for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost

EPISTLE
Galatians 3: 16-22

Brethren: To Abraham were the promises made, and to his seed. He saith not: And to his seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. Now this I say, that the testament which was confirmed by God, the law which was made after four hundred and thirty years, doth not disannul, to make the promise of no effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise. Why then was the law? It was set because of transgressions, until the seed should come, to whom He made the promise; being ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not of one: but God is one. Was the law then against the promises of God? God forbid. For if there had been a law given, which could give life, verily justice should have been by the law. But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by the faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

GOSPEL
Luke 17: 11-19

At that time, as Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee: and as He entered into a certain town, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off, and lifted up their voice, saying: Jesus, master, have mercy on us. Whom when He saw, He said: Go, show yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, as they went, they were made clean. And one of them, when he saw that he was made clean, went back, with a loud voice glorifying God: and he fell on his face before His feet, giving thanks: and this was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said: Were not ten made clean? And where are the nine? There is no one found to return, and give glory to God, but this stranger. And He said to him: Arise, go thy way; for thy faith hath made thee whole.

Can you tell me whether the 1962 Missal calls for the Gospel and Epistle to be read in Latin or English and/or both?

We have a new indult out here, this will be the thirteenth week and most of the time it is wonderful. However, one priest, who has offered the Mass three times, only reads it in Latin. I believe that he is not at all interested in keeping this alive.

Any "official" info about this will be appreciated, the sooner the better. Thanks.

I've never heard the Epistle, Gospel or Homily spoken in anything but the vernacular by any priest in any chapel.

It doesn't make any sense to do otherwise, as it's the only period in the mass that is specifically intended to be educational as opposed to sacrificial/devotional.

Someone needs to have a word with your priest, you are correct to perceive him as questionable.

The only way I have ever seen it is where the priest initially reads is in Latin to himself and then in the vernacular to the Faithful. I think the reading in the vernacular is optional. I don't know why a priest would read it in Latin to the congregation.

Regarding the reading in Latin and in English (or the local language).

It seems very peculiar that a priest would refuse (as opposed to neglect or forget) to read both the Epistle and Gospel in English.

Since a sermon or homily is an exposition of Scripture or Catholic doctrine, given to instruct and edify the faithful, why would a priest refuse to read the Epistle and Gospel in English? Something here doesn't make sense.

I believe that there's a requirement that the priest read the Epistle and the Gospel in English from the pulpit before he gives the sermon.

At the very least, the Third Baltimore Council decreed that the Gospel be read in English:

that on Sundays and solemn feast days, even in summer, all who have the care of souls shall read the day’s Gospel distinctly in the vernacular, and if time permits, instruct the people in the law of God for five minutes, notwithstanding any custom or pretext to the contrary. They are to do this at all Masses at which the faithful are present, whether sung Masses or low Masses or very early Masses. They will discharge this duty themselves, or if they are legitimately impeded, through other appropriate persons.

I believe that this is a quote from No. 216. It is cited in Catholic Sunday Preaching: The American Guidelines. This book has a foreword from Msgr John Tracy Ellis, known as the pre-eminent authority on the history of Catholicism in America. I mention that to indicate that the book ought to command respect.

Sorry, I forgot to ping you with my comment on your question. Would you let us know where you attend Mass?

Every TLM I have attended has had the Epistle and Gospel read (or sung) in Latin and then read in English just before the sermon.
