Dutch Carpenter Builds Full-Size Replica of Noah's Ark

Johan Huibers just finished a building a new ark that is even bigger than his original one, pictured here.

It turns out somebody actually knows what a cubit is. Because one man converted the Biblical measurements to create a scale model of Noah's ark. And it's big. Really big.

Johan Huibers of the Netherlands had a dream in 1991 that Holland was flooding. Three years and $1.6 million later, Huibers has a shiny new tourist attraction. The boat, which is as long as football field and four stories high, will be opened to the public as a tourist attraction with a religious message.

The ship can hold 1,500 people, but not two of every animal. Instead, he's opted for life-size plastic replicas of elephants, giraffes and others to adorn the decks. The animals that will make the voyage? The ones that can fit into a petting zoo and an aviary, which will be held on the top deck.

Huibers previously built an ark half the size of his most recent project. He was able to use the money gained from entrance fees to finance the full-scale boat.

He hopes to sail down the Thames River and dock in London for the 2012 Olympics.

“Did he use Gopher wood?”

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, namely, where was he able to find that much Gopher wood?

“Did he use Gopher wood?”

Oh, and my second question was, where did he get the plans?

It’s called a “holding tank”. They’ll just have to hold it. ;o)

‘Oh, and my second question was, where did he get the plans?”

Genesis 6:14-16 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.”

Available at IKEA.

I have to laugh at people who take Noah’s ark litterally. As if Noah really saved 2 of every species that are found on the island of Tasmania or Australia.

It is a nice fantasy to think that Noah had 2 of every animal on a boat.

First, wouldn’t you need 4 of every animal? I Mean, what if one male or female of the species dies? PRESTO - instant extinction!

I have to inform the true believers that 2 of each animal does not mean 2 of every animal, but 2 of every SPECIES of animal.

Not 2 ants. 2 each of 12,000 different ant species. OK, do you put them all in the same ant farm, or 12,000 different glass cases.

Not 2 spiders, but try over 37,000 different species of spiders. That would likely fill a Noah’s ark by itself.

So it is a nice little fantasy tale, and a valuable bible Parable, but people who really think Noah saved the world’s land animal population by putting them ALL in a boat for 40 days, need a severe reality check on reality.

You don't have a terribly high opinion of the Power of the Author of Time. Whats more you limit God to the degree of your own understanding and your own imagination. “Reality”? Who is the author of your “reality”, you or God?

Noah only had to do what God told him to do. Noah, like the rest of us, didn't have anything near the whole picture. You don't think the Author of All Things and Time itself couldn't possibly have gotten into one place everything necessary to what ever His ends were?

The story of Noah being true would place no strain on the God of the Bible like the strain of Creating Man and encoding him in his entirety in a piece of biological matter not even visible to the naked eye and containing tens of thousands of links in it's makeup yet you doubt this God's very Word because YOU can't imagine a particular and relatively small element of His Story?

Once you doubt an element of the Almighty you doubt The Almighty. Once you doubt His Word you lower Him to the level of a man. The Bible contains ONLY what God wanted it to contain. The Bible tells the ABSOLUTE Truth. What's so hard about that? God does not ask that you understand Him. He only asks that you have Faith in Him.

Well if God decides to flood the planet again I honestly hope they get it right and do NOT save the gays.

They don’t reproduce very well.

Funny you would mention Gays and the Ark in the same sentence. The rainbow in the sky was God’s promise to mankind that he would not destroy the earth again. It’s always been interesting to me that a group that is destroying itself has chosen a symbol of God’s Grace as their banner.

There is a whole science called Arcology—seeking to find remains of the ark in Turkey. Some have found some really impressive pictures of what might be the ship.

You don't know the architect of the universe. Otherwise, you wouldn't try to place limitations on Him.

You also seem unaware that all dog breeds are descended from a "prototype" dog. The same is true for bears (from a prototype bear). Try running with that concept...

“The rainbow in the sky was God’s promise to mankind that he would not destroy the earth again”

Just wanted to point out that the rainbow was God’s promise that He would not destroy the earth by FLOOD again...Genesis 9:11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

The earth will be destroyed but not by flood...see 2 Peter 3:1-11.

2 Peter 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness

When I teach from this portion of Scripture I like to point out that the “big bang” really hasn’t happened yet...but it is coming.

I don’t place limitations on God, I ask those who don’t seem to have analytical skills to help me understand how they can believe certain things. In this case, Noah would have had to have at least 2 of every SPECIES of land animal, not just 2 of every animal, on the ark. When people like my sister tell me Noah had 2 of every animal, I ask her what about every species of every animal.

All I get back for answers are the empty faith-based non-answers like you gave me. “You don’t know “Him” so why question this at all”.

Well, I am questioning it and I would like answers from those types of people who believe the literal stories such as these, that defy any logical analyis.

I’ll give you the assumption that Noah only needed 2 each, because it would be pretty easy for the Lord to insure that they all made the trip without expiring. I’ll give you that.

So how did Noah store his 2 each of 2900 species of snakes?

Here is a nice list of African game species for big game hunters. The list includes 11 species of Hartebeest, 3 species of Wildebeest, 2 Gnu, 23 species of Duiker, 8 species of Antelope, 11 species of Dikdik, 3 species of Kob, 6 species of Waterbuck, 9 species of Reedbuck, 3 species of Impala, 20 species of Gazelle, 4 species of Kudu, 4 species of Eland, 8 species of Bushbuck, and 4 species of Buffalo.

http://www.wild-about-you.com/AfricaGame.htm

How about 2 ea. of the 3800 species of lizards?

There are 50 species of rabbits.

There are 36 species of wild cats.

There are 30 species of gophers.

There is no way all of these species fit on any boat the size of which could have been built at the time.

This doesn’t include the room to provide for feeding feeding them all - especially those predators that only live by eating other animals - so don’t forget to bring on a few thousand mice for all those species of snake just to eat on that 40 day voyage.. And a few hundred thousand insects for the spiders to live on.

The waste matter alone would over-run the Ark in a few days, unless you had a thousands of people to clean the holding champers at least weekly.

I don’t recall the bible saying the animals were put into suspended animation for the trip, so they had to eat, pee & poop.

You wouldn’t have room for this on a Supertanker today, let alone the little Ark.

People apparently don’t think this through.

The story of Noah’s Ark is a good little parable, very likely based on some great flood myth based on historical reality in which Noah put some livestock on a boat to restart his farms or built a large barn on a mountain above flood stage.

It is a nice little story, but when I ask people to consider the real world challenge it would take to save at least 2 of every land animal SPECIES in the world and feed them and clean up after them, peoples eyes just glaze over, muttering “God’s will”, and give me answers like you did - a complete non-answer because I don’t know the architect of the universe.

Maybe not, but I know current biology.

AND, I’ll ask it again, which nobody addressed.

If Noah had 2 of every species of land animal, how come Australia and New Zealand have animals unique to those islands that are not found anywhere else in the world. Why aren’t there wallabies in Syria?

How did he figure out the conversion of cubits to meters? Supposedly one historian worked out there is 51.562 Centimeters to Cubits but many others refute that number.

U'NICORN, n. [L. unicornis; unus, one, and cornu, horn.]

1. an animal with one horn; the monoceros. this name is often applied to the rhinoceros.

2. The sea unicorn is a fish of the whale kind, called narwal, remarkable for a horn growing out at his nose.

There you have it...only the fool would deny that the unicorn was clearly understood hundreds of years ago as the rhinoceros. Even present day scientist know of the Narwal, the sea unicorn (although they would never use a Biblical name)
