You beat me to it. This specific story is bogus. However when I researched it months ago I found that a similar story actually did occur wit similar results.

Snopes does not call this a hoax. What they say is that the truth or not of this email is UNDETERMINED.
How many people accept Snopes as gospel?
Probably about the same as accept Wikipedia as set in stone.
