Thanks for bringing that up. That is also a problem in today’s society. I’ve known plenty of relationships in which an opposite-gender couple had a child without marriage and at least one of them gets a pretty devastating set of consequences when it goes south. That isn’t to say that there isn’t problems due to practiced homosexual behavior (disease, and mental health) but yes, we do have a double-edged sword that cuts both ways regarding immorality in today’s world.

There is a reason that the only ones prowling public parks and rest areas at 3:00 in the morning for guaranteed free anonymous sex are gay men. Nothing remotely like that is as widely available for lesbians or hetero men and women. Hetero men would do it but don’t on account of the lack of hetero women prowling the bushes. So it seems to me it is probably much easier to become hyper-sexualized as a gay male just on account of the sure thing/availability factor.

The AIDS epidemic is almost entirely due to homosexual activity and activism. However, most other social pathologies related to sexual behavior are, as might be expected, attributable to the behavior of the majority.

Well, the blacks and Latinos have been pretty devastated by the fact that if there is an absence of family, the gangs and/or the baiters potentially become family.

Guys like me have a house or room to do it, so I don’t understand why someone would bother with a park, even at late hours. Even when I wasn’t in school, I definitely had a job where I would have to get up between 5 and 6 am to make it on time.

If anonymous guaranteed free sex is the object, I reckon it would be easier to meet and get on with it in well known public location. Nobody would ever have to find out where anyone else lives, so someone coming back as a burglar or something isn’t a risk. Also I should say I have no idea of the % of gay men who actually partake in such things, just that everyone who does is going to be a gay male.

"Many seem to take the position that heterosexual sins, including sodomy, are “merely” bad, while homosexual activity is “really most sincerely” bad."

What an astute observation. I actually came back and looked this up again, just because I admired the phrasing so much. I'm stealin' it, Dorothy.

Help yourself!

The phrase came to mind when we were discussing whether young Bill was “merely” sick - planning to spend the day sitting around the dining room in his pajamas, blowing his nose - or “really most sincerely” sick - not going to get out of bed at all.

I was thinking about this today in light of the story in Genesis about Lot, and a roughly parallel story in Judges about a Levite's concubine. In both cases, when men are threatened with sexual assault, women - virgins - are proposed to the rapists instead. (The Levite's concubine was actually sacrificed and died.)There's a suggestion that, when these things are done to women, it doesn't matter very much. It's not as if they're men or anything.

Perhaps it has to do with men's disinclination to be the objects of penetration. The horror with which most men regard being the objects of oral or anal sex contradicts dramatically with their eagerness to perform these acts on women. It's as if they believe women are a lower order of humanity.

So true. And disturbing.

Plus, I think, generally, men who commit sodomy upon women, don't even recognize themselves as sodomites.

To me, one of the most disturbing elements is the lack of appreciation for the virtue of temperance. There seems, often, to be an underlying assumption that genital pleasure is the One Unlimited Good, with every other good given only a tentative position.

For example, Msgr. Pope mentioned in a post about communion for people in irregular marriage situations that they have the option of sexual continence ... but he rarely finds anyone willing to give this serious consideration.

Msgr. Pope keeps getting better and better.

As for those who wold rather have illicit sexual union than Holy Communion --- they have certainly revealed the real identity of their one true god.

I like the way Msgr. Pope goes into the principles behind moral teachings and emphasizes that following God’s law gives us our best chance of happy and meaningful lives.

What you are talking about in the case of Lot is a case of angels of God being the targets of attempted rape. Lot was scared that if they actually got their hands on the angels, God would unleash the equivalent of a nuclear explosion on the whole city right then and there. People seldom think when they are scared and unprepared for the situation. Lot was both. Thankfully, the attackers got rendered blind, and with burning pain at that.

I can certainly agree with the idea of Lot’s being terrified witless. It fits with his entire trajectory as a character.
