Catholic school on the outskirts of Philadelphia has come under heavy attack in recent days after firing an openly lesbian teacher in a same-sex civil marriage with her partner.
Since 2007, Waldron Mercy Academy knew that teacher Margie Winters had been civilly married to her lesbian lover, but they kept her on as Director of Religious Education anyway for a total of eight years, under the advisement that she keep her relationship secret and not discuss it with students or parents. Though she kept the order, parents from the school eventually found out about Winters and complained to the school and the Philadelphia archdiocese. Winters was fired shortly after, on June 22.
In an e-mail addressed to school faculty and parents last Friday, principal Nell Stetser first praised Winters for her "amazing contributions" to the school before saying, "In the Mercy spirit, many of us accept life choices that contradict current Church teachings, but to continue as a Catholic school, Waldron Mercy must comply with those teachings."

she should never have been hired in the first place.
you can’t teach kids morality while having teachers openly flaunt their immorality. the fact that parents found out is proof that she was flaunting it.
why would a lesbian want to work there anyway? she knows that her lifestyle is immoral and she will be around teachings to that effect, so why?
this was a homo setup from the get-go. looking for publicity and a lawsuit. it just took 8 years to find a situation where she could sue and claim victim status.

I don’t think there are any laws that says they can’t hire and fire who they want
They created the drama by knowingly hiring a gay. Its hard to be sympathetic to them knowing this.
In this instance, the school was complicit with allowing their rules to be violated and ignored. The article says the administration knew for some time about her lesbian relationship, but decided a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ agreement would suffice. If this woman can prove that the school had prior knowledge about her orientation, her lawyers may run with that fact.
And it is not like she was just a music, art or social studies teacher.... she was Director of Religious Education???
The article might be misleading or wrong. The two programs provide tax credits to companies or scholarship funds to assist students to attend private schools. The money/credit is offset against taxes for these organizations. but no state money is directly given to the schools.

this lady (and i use the term very loosely) is a nutter.
i just read another story about her where she’s prattling on about how the Catholic church has committed injustices against people like her and that she’s hoping that Pope Francis will reverse church teaching.

It is amazing how little weight the constitution carries in this country anymore.
The only reason the 2nd Amendment survives is there is a large active segment of the population willing to defend it.
There doesn't seem to be much defence for the 1st Amendment and so it's dying. In neither case do the words in the Constitution have much affect on events.
I’m in the fifth stage of loss. It is entertaining to me now. The left has been pushing the Cloward/Priven strategy for years. I now believe it is the conservative’s best hope. It is a good time to be old.
If it is no to both questions above the school will have problems.
