Can someone tell me if they ever heard of the Enoch Tablets or the two stelae?

Posted on 01/11/2016 3:12:40 PM PST by cradle of freedom

I have heard something about two tablets that were supposedly written by Enoch or Seth. Have you heard about this? They were supposed to have been written before the flood. I read about this some years ago and have forgotten the details.

TOPICS: History
KEYWORDS: adam; antiquities; enoch; genesis

There is a book of Enoch.

But, I am not so sure I would put a lot of faith into it. My guess is it so old it more Sumerian lore than anything related to Jewish tradition.

There are books of Enoch which mention “heavenly tablets”, but the books are treated as pseudepigrapha. That last term says that scholars even consider the attribution to Enoch to be false. Someone else wrote the books and put Enoch’s name on them in order to give them some stature.

The books of Enoch are considered Old Testament pseudopigrapha. There are plenty of New Testament psuedeprigraphic texts, usually with the names of some Apostle. The early church excluded such texts from the New Testament canon due to their suspect provenance.

I saw a documentary about this and other “supposed” lost books of the Bible. They were fake. If you read them, you can see for yourself that they bear little resemblance to the Bible. I even looked them up after watching it several years ago.

We peons couldn't read them anyways. Joe Smith had to use his soup stone uhh I mean his seer stone and put it in his hat stick his head in and then read what was on the tablet across the room.

A lot of those books were written at the same time as the bible. But the folks that put the bible together wanted a consistent theme.

Anyway, most of those lost books were not translated by the court of King James, so they would not “sound” the same.

Let's see. James sat on the English throne from 1603-1625. The New Testament portion of the Douay-Rheims was published in 1582 in France. The Geneva Bible (Breeches Bible) was published in 1560.

Compare the Geneva to the AV, and one will see that the Court of St. James had almost nought to do with the 'sound'.

Was there something written down from the time of the early patriarchs that contained the history of the human race from Adam? They had to have some writing in the days of the flood and after. I have been looking up steles and tablets, stone carvings were quite common in ancient times and are found in many places. Wouldn’t the ancient patriarchs have carved the history on stone tablets or steles? They had to have writing to preserve the very ancient history. Stone steles kept in some protected temple would have kept the early history for thousands of years.

The Book of Enoch PDF - Scriptural-Truth.com

Enoch is a very interesting character.

Enoch was the son of Jared (Genesis 5:19–21), the father of Methuselah, and the great-grandfather of Noah. The Bible says that Enoch lived 365 years before he was taken by God. The text reads that Enoch "walked with God: and he was no more; for God took him"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enoch_%28ancestor_of_Noah%29

Enoch is mentioned at least a dozen times in the Bible.

Hebrews 11:5
By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: "He could not be found, because God had taken him away." For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

There is no evidence that any of the Pentateuch was written down prior to the time of Moses. However, it could have been.

I would suggest that you might want to pay attention to Dr. Michael Heiser. He is a Hebrew and Old Testament scholar. One of his specialties is ancient religions which were extant at the time of Abraham and even before. I am sure that he would be quite familiar with any written material from these time periods.

Heiser is also an expert in ancient languages and contributes to secular studies of Egyptian hieroglyphics.

I include this article from his web site since it also mentions Enoch.

Heiser approaches ancient topics from a unique perspective, but he is quite orthodox in theology.

Josephus. Antiquities of the Jews

Chapter 2

3. Now Adam, who was the first man, and made out of the earth, (for our discourse must now be about him,) after Abel was slain, and Cain fled away, on account of his murder, was solicitous for posterity, and had a vehement desire of children, he being two hundred and thirty years old; after which time he lived other seven hundred, and then died. He had indeed many other children, but Seth in particular. As for the rest, it would be tedious to name them; I will therefore only endeavor to give an account of those that proceeded from Seth. Now this Seth, when he was brought up, and came to those years in which he could discern what was good, became a virtuous man; and as he was himself of an excellent character, so did he leave children behind him who imitated his virtues. All these proved to be of good dispositions. They also inhabited the same country without dissensions, and in a happy condition, without any misfortunes falling upon them, till they died. They also were the inventors of that peculiar sort of wisdom which is concerned with the heavenly bodies, and their order. And that their inventions might not be lost before they were sufficiently known, upon Adam's prediction that the world was to be destroyed at one time by the force of fire, and at another time by the violence and quantity of water, they made two pillars, the one of brick, the other of stone: they inscribed their discoveries on them both, that in case the pillar of brick should be destroyed by the flood, the pillar of stone might remain, and exhibit those discoveries to mankind; and also inform them that there was another pillar of brick erected by them. Now this remains in the land of Siriad to this day.
