VATICAN CITY, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Monday extended indefinitely to all Roman Catholic priests the power to forgive abortion, a right previously reserved for bishops or special confessors.
Francis, who has made a more inclusive and forgiving Roman Catholic Church a characteristic of his papacy, made the announcement in a document known as an "apostolic letter" after Sunday's close of the Church's "Holy Year of Mercy".
He said he wanted to "restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life" but "there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with (God)"....

How about being a conservative?
That’s stupid. The Lord forgives our sins when we bring them to Him. (Catholic here).
I dare say it is not up to them or to the Pope.
It sure would have been nice if he could have mentioned abortion once during his visit to Washington, instead of going on and on about “carbon dioxide pollution.”

If you deny that sins are forgiven in the Sacrament of Penance, you are not a Catholic.
If there’s anything unforgivable, it’s abortion.
Just an observation but I’d think that power is reserved for someone in a higher plane.
Out of your jurisdiction, Pal.
Not a good Pope IMHO.
You bring your sins before God and seek forgiveness, not to a mortal man in a white smock.
I thought Jesus forgives sin? This confuses me. I’m serious.
I guess that murder is kinda’ sorta’ almost ok with this religious jackass . . . Well, we really don’t want to offend the people who’ve murdered their unborns . . . that would be controversial, and we do want to kinda’ be like the Methodists, don’t we?
The formula of absolution used in the Latin Church expresses the essential elements of this sacrament: The Father of mercies is the source of all forgiveness. He effects the reconciliation of sinners through the Passover of his Son and the gift of his Spirit, through the prayer and ministry of the Church:
"God, the Father of mercies, through the death and the resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
I didn’t know that priests had the power to forgive any sin.
The priest on Fox & Friends this morning agrees with you.
I’m sure women who have had an abortion are just running to the confessional. The pope’s concept is dumb.
Murder is murder.
Only one sin is unforgivable. Read the bible and know it.
Francis the talking poop needs to go to confession for life, he is the false prophet and will dealt with by God...
Keep the faith fellow Catholics...God will take care of us if we pray and are diligent to Him...
I always thought the mortal sin of abortion could be forgiven in the confessional. I did not know it couldn’t be until now.
Certainly, the Catholic Church has always preached that forgiveness is available to women (and men) involved in abortion. How is this a change?
