I thought so.

Those folks who do that sort of thing are GOOD!

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8-9

How’s that for poerty Mr. Bell?

I was pondering scripture today,
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

I think homosexually is mentioned for many reasons, but one being in the last days the deception is so strong, the Word of God is perverted and so it is clearly laid out that this is a sin by name so that the words of scripture cannot be twisted, unrepentant sinners will not inherit the kingdom, and will not have eternal life.

And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

A wolf in sheep’s clothing? I’d say he’s more a serpent in sheep’s clothing.

I partially agree with him - you can read it literately in order to get to the correct literalness - context is everything.

I've had folks tell me it's a sin to smoke and/or not eat right because the Bible tells us the body is our temple - they totally ignore that that phrase is about sexual impurity and has nothing to do with step aerobics and salads.

I’ll go with Franklin Graham on this one....

“... prompting evangelist Franklin Graham, among many others, to brand him a heretic...”

Why doesn’t Bell just come out and admit he’s an atheist?

“This is why lots of people want nothing to do with the Christian faith. They see it as an endless list of absurdities and inconsistencies and they say, ‘Why would I ever want to be part of that?’ ”

Well naturally they do, what did he suppose?

Properly understood, Bell argued, the Bible was written “to unite, not to be weaponized to further your side over and against another’s.”

If only more people tried that approach.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica,
in that they received the word
with all readiness of mind,
and searched the scriptures daily,
whether those things were so.

Acts 17:11

Acts 17:11

“The word” being the old testament. The letters of Paul, John, Peter, the description of John’s vision and the chronicling of the acts of the apostles as well as the recording of the events and sayings of Jesus life, death and resurrection had not yet been penned.

Not that they do not have tremendous value and contain the word of God. It’s just that they are the words of men inspired by God. And so are the words of many ministers in this country, but we don’t staple their sermons to the end of our bibles.

I’m still trying to work out my perspective of how the “Bible” that we all carry around really fits into the picking order in the Christian life. I used to practically worship it as though it was the “fourth” part of the trinity. I no longer do. I revere it highly and very much believe it contains the word of God, though. I just don’t believe it “is” the word of God, as in, every single word is from God. It has more humanity in its content than that. Too many recommendations from Paul where he explicitly states that what he is writing is not from God, but from Paul. Therefore, merely by the fact that those words are in the bible is solid evidence that not every word in the bible is the word of God.

It’s kinda funny. Christianity and our bible is about helping us to make our own right decisions about how to live our life and come to God. Man made religions are, in an odd way, more “precise” about it. They are more “rule books” similar to the old Jewish law.

In my opinion, it’s very easy to stray from a straight up point in the bible by being a slave to a method of understanding culture, history, grammar, life of the writer, etc.

Those things are important but not as important as simple reading comprehension.

The old adage is helpful: “When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense;”

What Bell says:
“Properly understood, Bell argued, the Bible was written “to unite, not to be weaponized to further your side over and against another’s.”

What Jesus Says:
“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Matthew 10:24

I know which ‘side over against another’ I’ll take,
