The Arameans are a well-integrated Christian minority in the Netherlands. Originally they came from Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Southern Turkey. Dutch newspaper ‘De Telegraaf’ interviewed several of them and talked about the civil war in Syria.
Christian refugee Johnny Shabo says that the same group responsible for the civil war in the eighties is now responsible for more chaos. The Muslim brotherhood that attacked the regime of Assad’s father earlier, are now attacking Assad junior’s regime.
Shabo says that the leaders of ISIS and Al Qaeda who are fighting in Syria are part of the Muslim brotherhood. For Christian Arameans the Muslim rebels pose a bigger threat than Assad’s troops, Shabo says.
“It’s a fact that Christians in Syria were left alone by Assad as long as they didn’t interfere in politics”, he adds. “Every Christian from Syria will tell you that before the civil war, our country was a far better place for us than Turkey.”
A while ago the Aramean priest Zuhri Khazaal travelled from Syria to visit the Dutch community in the city of Enschede.
Zuhri blames the West, Turkey and Arabic countries for arming the jihadist rebels. “And now the Turks are lighting up the fire with their invasion. Everybody in Syria wants to be left alone and wants that Assad stays leader. Why? Because compared to other Arab dictators, Assad is a gift from heaven for Christians”.

It’s a complex situation. Calculating that it’s advantageous to stand up for Christians (because he knows that will moderate the West’s objections) doesn’t mean that it’s peachy to be using chemical WMD on populations.
At least Trump is capable of some nuance. Better than these supposed liberals.

He has indeed. The same cannot be said of the Islamist “rebels” that the Clinton/Obama/Kerry regime fininanced/armed/trained in alliance with the Saudis...cheered on by Juan McCain and Lindsay Graham. ISIS emerged from that crew.
Assad is exactly like Saddam was in Iraq (except that he never fought wars with any of his neighbors).
Both countries were ruled by the Baath party (though fierce rivals of each other, not allied).
The Baathist party governing structure was based on both the Nazi and Soviet Communist party terror models. Both surpressed religious extremism (along with everything else deemed not supporting teh regime).
Both were ruthless. And effective. And removing them - in both countries, has brought about a completely predictable anarchy favoring the most extremist religious elements.
In both countries cases, that move was a totally predictable - and avoidable - catastrophe.
So, it turns out that Bush I was right in leaving Saddam in place.
We have Dubya (Iraq Invasion, 2003)- and The Marxist (”Arab Spring” fomenting) - to thank for the Middle East disasters of the past 15 years.
Which shows you the genius of Assad's long game, as he and his father have secularly protected Christians since 1971 so he could gas 60 assorted Syrians last month.
If even the man after God’s own heart, David, could be chastised, why are we complaining if Assad has been.
There’s something to be said for leaving a partly filled vacuum be if nothing better is at hand to fill it.
Islamic countries won’t turn into secular liberal democracies without something like an Ataturk figure.
Both Bashar al-Assad and his father Hafez al-Assad, who belong to the minority Alawite Sect of Islam, protected the Christians, Druze, and several other minority religions in Syria from the majority Sunni Moslem population.
It was to Assad’s political benefit to provide the protection and thus gain the support of the minority Moslem sects and the Christians.
Christians lived fairly well in Syria until McCain and the CIA got the insane idea to run guns to jihadists
Also note, Syria sent 4,000 soldiers to help us in 1991.
I saw Hama after it was destroyed during a MB led revolt in the town by Hafez Assad (Papa to Bashar). Only the Christian Quarter was spared. The rest was open ground covered in carefully arranged piles of rubble. Of course the Assad regime is brutal and evil. But the other side would be as bad or worse.
Assad is a minority Alawite. How does a minority, especially in the mid-east, rule? By suppression. He also used the other minorities, such as Shia and Christians, who also had to fear Sunni-majority rule. Plus, the Christians were not Muslim, are themselves divided among different denominations, and were apolitical. Christians were also useful to the regime, and more likely to be professionals like doctors and engineers.
This predictable anarchy was the goal of Obama's Arab Spring with Clinton and McCain doing the dirty work. Libya was also a result of the Obama doctrine and Egypt as well but it seems the military kept control. The vacuum created by removing dictators led to ISIS. (Obviously removing the Shah led to what we have in Iran today.) I have no clue why anyone thinks extremist Islamic "governments" are the lessor evil to totalitarian regimes. What does it matter if Shia vs Sunni kill each other? Is it worth American life and treasure?
This administration should have absolutely no legitimate reason to meddle in any of Obama's trash can.
First, I am not complaining, I am observing.
Second, if it's God that's doing the Chastising, I'm fine with it.
If it's the Political Terrorist moon god worshiping, Christian hating Muslim Brotherhood, that's another matter.
Thirdly, there was an obvious illogical disregard for the sincerity demonstrated by the historical timeline.
God can use any old heathen for the purpose... read your bible. The heathen is then responsible for his own sin, but that is taken care of separately.
But why are YOU bringing that up? Donald Trump launched the anti-offensive. Last I knew he didn’t worship any moon god.
Assad was the closest "multi-culti" secular leader the mid-east had, or will have. The trend now is towards Sunni majority and strict Islamist rule. Assad was an Alawite, and they have a history of being suppressed by Sunni Muslims. Alawaties drink alcohol, don't believe in Sharia, and also have many non-Muslim beliefs, probably borrowed from Christianity.
Whoever in Saudi Arabia or the USA has tried to arrange Assads overthrow will, by default, put Wahabbists in charge. Christians and other minority groups will then be completely wiped out.
That the US Government would be involved in this, willingly or by default, is evil.
What’s the other choice, to kiss up to Assad’s actions no matter what he does?
At least the US can try to be a sane hegemon.
