The fact is that when the Church ever veered in the direction of married priests they always had to pull it back and bring in celebrate monks to fix the problems that always cropped up. They found through experience that a priest needs to be dedicated to Jesus and his ministry exclusively. That is why in the Orthodox church a married priest cannot become a bishop.

As opposed to the "smooth sailing" the RCC is enjoying today??

Marriage seemed to serve the early NT church well with Paul, Peter and others being married.

Jesus wasn't married. Shouldn't his example be the ideal?

John, the beloved disciple, wasn't married either. Doesn't his example count?

Paul says flatly in 1 Cor that celibacy is the superior state.
