Well, contracepting families have been a factor in the decline of priestly vocations. The late great Justice Scalia, himself the father of priest, explained that in a family with a lot of kids (like his) it’s not as hard to get a son to “take one for the team.” In a family with 1 or 2 kids, priestly vocations are more likely to be discouraged.

Right, the decline in vocations is complex and has many roots.

Lots of heterosexual priests “came out” in the 1960s and 1970s by getting married (often to female religious), which act terminated their service.

This increased the PROPORTION of priests for whom forgoing marriage to a woman was not a sacrifice.
