A unique monastery--Russia's own Holy Land, founded by the controversial Patriarch Nikon in 1656--has finally been rebuilt in Moscow
The breathtakingly beautiful, architecturally unique and historically significant New Jerusalem monastery has occupied a place of unique veneration among Russians during its 350-year history. A few years before the Revolution, it was visited by about 35,000 people annually.
It was originally founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon, who built it to imitate structurally and thematically the Church of Christs Tomb in Jerusalem. This was done so that Russians who could not make the long pilgrimage to Jerusalem could get a taste of the Holiest shrine of the Christian world.
It was demolished by the German military during WWII. The restoration, overlooked in recent years by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, has taken decades, was finally completed in 2017 and now a jewel of the Russian Orthodox Church once again shines in all its glory.
The Resurrection Cathedral was built like a copy of the most holy site of the Christian world: the Church of Christs Tomb in Jerusalem

Absolutely gorgeous. I marvel at the things man can create, though he does get help. 8>)
FYI; enjoy the photos.
Wow, the Russians have a way with some things.
The turquoise roof is incredible (photo at the site).
Anyone know how the roof is constructed? Turquoise-colored tiles? Metal? Paint?
SO much more in common with the Russian than what keeps us apart. When he has dispensed with NK, Trump needs to sit down with Putin and plan a joint effort to combat Islamofascism, Erdogan, Iran, and excise radical Islam from all of the West.
Beautiful and check out the cat in the first picture.
Destroyed by the Nazis, or by Stalin?
It’s like a work of art.
It’s amazing. Thanks for sharing :-)
Just beautiful...thank you for sharing.
The president should visit. Heads would explode.
Spectacular! So beautiful.
This is what happens when for 70 plus years a people were starved of The Word Of God.
So beautiful. I’m glad they restored it. A shame to let it go.
